what a dull show.
Jerry sounds like he is about to die...again, during Shakedown.
7 song first set. very dull.
the Mr. Fantasy>Hey Jude has been soooo overplayed.

Not much life on this night in 88'. Gerry struggles through the entire show. Bob is in pretty good form and Brent does a decent job of pulling things together.
Bertha and Fantasy stand out. Overall weak set list....

yes, that first two song bit, with Brent not screaming (how sweet his voice is on Goodtimesroll)
and then Jerry cutting loose on the shakedown, that's 5 stars alone
whoever said this wasn't doingit for ya, best listen again

Subject: great set list - very nice Let it Grow
Subject: great set list - very nice Let it Grow
Overall: sound isn't great for the beginning of the first set, but jboy goes waayyy overboard in talking it down. This is a really solid show with a great song list. I particularly like the first set.
The scene: while our group of friends at Landover was enormous, only Larry and I continued on to these Philly shows, and even he took off after the first two, leaving me travelling on my own for the last two Philly shows and then onto NYC for a couple of shows. We camped across from the Spectrum in the park (the same park where cops took our stash the summer before, but at least didn't arrest us!). I remember a guy dying in his tent during these shows and I think someone found him in the morning. I think it was an OD - anyone else remember that? I guess that sort of thing became more common later as the scene just deteriorated and H made its big return, but I remember it as a pretty big deal at that time.
The music: one of the best first set song lists I can think of. But it isn't played completely to its potential, unfortuately. LTGTR starts loose (maybe related to the sound problems?), but ends nicely (Brent: "somebody told me it might take all night" :-). Shakedown is good but doesn't have that spark to put it over the top. It just feels a bit sluggish. Lay Me Down is beautiful. Sound problems seem to be all sorted out by the start of Loser. Phil is turned up nicely for the Let It Grow jam, and he has some really great contributions. He even leads the band back to the refrain after the jam - rather than Jerry doing it, which in some nerdy way I find interesting. This is a great Let it Grow; definitely not your usual Grow for this era. Doesn't have the over-the-top energy of some Grows, but it is really well played with interesting contributions from Phil, Bobby, Brent (though his synth sound almost gets annoying at some points), and Mickey. Entire second set is strong with nothing really standing out as being too far above average for this era. Things end with a good Fantasy>Jude>Lovelight.

Subject: Efficient, but did Very Little for me
Subject: Efficient, but did Very Little for me
After such an intensive reviewing schedule I needed a few days vacation as not to overstuff my head...
1st Set: The sound's awfully low and trudgy dull and lessening the listener's excitement... "LTGTR" finds the men in good vocal form. See the East Coast breakout of "Shakedown" should be a thrilling moment, but considering the sound lacks a sharp propulsive engine, it makes reviewing the show rather tedious. The song moves at a brisk pace but the jam cuts thin. "Walkin" is too mild to be effective. Little crunch at early 5's. "To Lay" is a rare treat, but the sound is not vibrant. Time to switch moods and gears informing that bitch that indeed "It's All Over Now." It is moderately entertaining. "Loser" is ironically always a delight, and even despite the sound it soars during the late 5's/early 6's. "Let" is delicate filled with bells...it's pointed but not briliant.
2nd Set: Good cheer should be here with the appearance of "Bertha," but it's rather ineffectual. "Greatest" is cool and collected, but ehhh..."Crazy" flows sufficiently...not much of an adventure - however, it wades along nicely into a get pumped off drum intro to "Truckin." Standard run through though they try and create some excitement at the climax, which sounds kinda ugly. Time for "Drums" and "Space" which sound favorable but non-distinctive. "The Wheel" is a bit of a mess, "Miracle" is nonsense. It's all automatic mode now..., "Dear/Hey Jude" is fine and unmemorable. To close out the first of four nights, "Lovelite" is straight-ahead and piping hot.
"Black" is a fair way to end this fair show.
2 1/2 stars rounded down; there's not that much life here.

I loved this show from start to finish. I went in wanting a Shakedown (I was in the mood for Shakedown), and got it as a double opener. To Lay Me Down was a special treat once again (I had seen the breakout at Hampton a few months earlier, but it never became common, and this is the only other one I ever saw). It's All Over Now was always a welcome choice for me, especially over a Dylan cover. And Loser...say no more, squire. Arguably Jerry's most consistently intense first-set song (though there's Bird Song, too, eh?) and a personal favorite, it delivered as usual. And was followed by another pillar of 1st-set intensity: had seen a smokin' Let It Grow earlier that week in Landover, and was treated to another--I remember thinking it was cool to see the pony-tailed (Europe 72-looking) Bobby performing (the 73-penned) song. Sweet little first set.
Any lyrical challenges on Bertha aside, the Bertha->Greatest Story second set opener SMOKED. The sound was nice & loud by now. The only Greatest Story I ever saw (in some 45 shows), and as I recall it was absolutely perfect. Crazy Fingers was still fairly hard to come by at this moment (and this was my first!), so it was a thoroughly enjoyable pre-Drums. Brent shined on Fantasy/Hey Jude, and all the kids' bones were shakin' for Lovelight, a great call to end this show.
Great setlist, great energy, looking at setlists for the other nights, I'm wondering why I didn't make an effort to attend the rest of this stand...?
I recall this was the tour when the Dead organization finally had to step in and start regulating the vending, though. In retrospect, a sad commentary on the Heads' (non-)efforts to govern themselves~ which would all too soon culminate/explode in the Pittsburgh '89 debacle.

The first set is really hot (Shakedown, Loser and Let it Grow in particular) ... 2nd set is solid, but not quite at the same level.
This was a great run of shows to be at. Camping in the park just across the street, no rain the entire time.

Other than a lyrically-challenged Bertha, the whole show smokes, esp. last half of 1st set and post-drums. Great version of Black Muddy, too... as good as they ever did.
The sound quality is great, but the tracking here is a mess. I've retracked the whole thing for personal enjoyment and will look for help on uploading, which I can't do myself. AFAIK the only music missing is (at least) several seconds worth of the Wheel intro, presumably from the master cassette being flipped. I'd give it 4 stars if it weren't for the tracking problems.

The scene outside these shows outshined the shows themselves. It was the only time I can remember the city letting us camp in FDR Park, right across Broad St. from the Spectrum. It was one of the best weeks of my life. A HUGE scene in the park, but the shows were only so-so. Check out the Let It Grow from this night though, outstanding! One of my favorite versions. On the off night of this 4 night run I went to see Tangerine Dream at the Tower Theater, what a week!!
