So frickin' good!
The best, the pinnacle of the 90 tour. Such a great show, the 1st set with Bucket into the second with Scarlett - Fire, surging into the peak of the summer tour. Top form excellent

awesome Fire great show
This was a special show for me a b'day. The band completely delivered. I always find it ironic that the east coast heads didnt understand the vibe of the west coast shows. When they were driving to the shows from the house it was a much mellower good energy vibe that if you tuned into was heavenly. This is the difference between grateful dead family and the critics that have never stepped out in a show. Peace and thx for all the memories GD !

We really should be reviewing and writing this stuff in the new Tetzeli fix source for this show. This is at least a four star show if not better. One of the the all time extended Around and Around's at this one BTW. Hey CM I'm still drooling over the prospect of your source for this one that you mentioned. What's the story?

Good show. Nothing that special compared to the best of 1990. Nice sound quality.

Longer Is Not Always Better
Sorry to burst some bubbles here, but, in my opinion, after a largely solid Set 1 the band fell asleep in set 2. Long jams, yes. But, in sharp contrast to another opinion, I would have to put this Scarlet > Fire maybe in the bottom 5. To me it was largely a half hour of low energy noodling by comparison to the vast majority of SCs out there. And, by the way, the Cornell version from 1977 has been rated by many, me included as one of the all time great ones. Everybody has their own take and this is mine. The 2nd set is largely uninspired and listless.

Okay, so this is somewhere in the lower 2/3rds of spring/summer 1990, and sure, there are middling mistakes throughout, but that's like complaining about the scratched label on a bottle of Dom Perignon. It's still an exquisite experience.

Scarlet-Fire
The Scarlet-Fire from this show is consistently overlooked/underestimated. Listen to it; it is in my top 5 of all time, and it is my favorite segue ever. Just try showing me a better one (I think it beats Cornell no question).

not bad
sound on this is decent. earlier reviewer mentions jerry's vocals being turned down during first verse of help. also seems to be a slight problem at the beginning of scarlet. i was at this show. my friends and i had a debate about missing parts of sets (since we missed cold rain and snow at cal expo the week before because they wanted to finish their beers). well, they missed the beginning of help at this one and were bummed, effectively ending the debate. highlights of show: help>slip>franklin's, hell in a bucket (nice rippin' version) and round n round (one of the best that I ever saw). they only thing i haven't seen in any of the other reviews is mention of some serious vocal miscues on hell in a bucket and scarlet. bob drops the entire "unable to dance on your grave" verse (but the playing of the song is gnarly. and jerry switches the 2nd and 3rd verses of scarlet and drops the entire 4th verse. still a good show and one I'm glad I was at. glad to have a good recording of it too. 4 stars.

In the mood to play
I would agree the Birdsgonesouth that Jerry was in the mood to extend the jams in the second set. I would consider this a good though not outstanding show in terms of playing quality (some missed notes, harmonies, etc.), but it is special in the jams. The extended playing allows for great band dynamics and the desire to play shines through. Around and Around they just wouldn't let end.

Happy 25th
These shows were touted as the 25th anniv shows but that was nothing official (maybe the Truckin > Touch from the next night was the Dead's subtle nod). Anyway this was my first west coast run - and this one was a great one to start with. A raging Help > Slip > Frank to get it going, a nice rippin first set but the super LONG second set kicks ass, expansive versions of everything, Jerry MIDI abounds - great jam out of He's Gone, and a massive Aroundx2 you have to hear!! Jerry didn't want to end this one. Not the best of 90 but plenty of highlights.

Great Scarlet > Fire
One of my favorite Scarlet > Fires!! Lasts about a half hour and smokes. The Blow Away is hot as well. Brent goes off at the end. Nice 1st set as well with Help > Slip > Tower to open and an unusually placed Bucket to close the set. Superb summer '90 show.

Bad MD5 files
None of the tracks verified with the MD5 files. There are also some differences in the number of tracks in the MD5 file (
e.g., 7 tracks for disc 2) and the SHN files (6 tracks for disc 2). This makes me think the MD5 files are incorrect. Did anyone else have a problem with their MD5s?

some comments
a good sounding sbd.(jerry's vocal signal in the PA is a little low for the first verse of 'help' but gets corrected immediately) otherwise, flawless as far as sbd's go. a great show, with an extremely tight help>slip>franklins and my all time favorite version of 'just a little light'- just sublime. scarlet>fire is good but not great, although brent really turns up the heat with 'blow away'...dropping the f-bomb at least five or six times in the process. wore this one out on analog, so grateful to have it again here. a very underrated show for 1990.
