Another tremendous '72 show, which of course is saying a lot. Excellent sound quality in this version, the whole band sounds great, the guitar tones are awesome and Bob Weir especially sounds fantastic. 71-72 was a great time for Bob, I much prefer the gritty rock tone compared to his later thin and trebly sound.

What a great recording of a really good show. I have no memory of the people who didn't give me a ride to this show. I do have the ticket and memories of all the other amazing Grateful Dead shows I've seen since. These recordings are the important record of a beautiful era. The Dark Star from the previous night is fantastic. A box set of all three shows would be nice.

What more needs said, delicious greatest story with the st. stephen tease.

My first show was 6 nights earlier, so i had some idea what i was walking into. Enjoy this gem it changed my life forever. I wish everyone could feel the joy of this band at their best. MY life started in the fall of 72.

The "He's gone->Other One->Bobby McGee->Wharf Rat" probably my all time favorite performance. Maybe 2nd only to the 2-15-73 Dark Star->Eyes->China Doll. The separation on this recording is amazing. Bob uses just a mere taste of chorus on his guitar in Brokedown Palace and He's Gone and it sounds very flavorful. Everybody is firing on all cylinders and listening to each other, exploring a lot of different spaces(sounds like to me).

New to the archive, and this show was one of the first places I went. Wow what a joy to hear this again, and to hear it all. This show loomed large in my now mostly gone tape collection lo these many many years ago, and I still remember every sequence of the entire other one to wharf rat run. My old tape cut off at the start of Sugar Magnolia. Incredible to hear finally what I missed all that time of the remainder of this really remarkable "sleeper" of a show. This deserves a serious listen for anyone with an appreciation for the 72-74 years.

Should be held in pretty much equal regard as DP 11. Whoa, what a unique opening to china cat by Mr. Weir. they sure did a lot of experimenting and growth with that tune in '72. Phil's solo after he's gone is reeeeaaaal crunchy. and Jerry during GDTRFB...spellbinding. This whole show is kick ass, listen and you won't be sorry.

It's pretty awesome with that St. Stephen jam in the middle. He's Gone, and TOO > Jam > Bobby McGee >TOO are quite special as well. This show is not to be missed!!

My seat for this show was in the balcony however during intermission I looked over the railing and saw my friends downstairs in the 10th row. I headed downstairs met up with them at their seats,had a sip of cool-aid, and when the lights went out found myself at the orchestra pit wall directly in front of Bob & Jerry. I actually caught Garcia's gaze a few times during the incredible second set. Although I'd been to quite a few shows in NY area before this one and had a dozen of those old vinyl bootlegs, I thought I was familiar with all their songs but stuff like "He's Gone" and "Mississippi 1/2 Step" were just getting their footing. Watching Weir's hands playing that rhythm was mesmerizing. We'd been hoping for a Sugar Magnolia and during the song I turned around to view the audience and the theater was alive. I could see the balcony bouncing to the beat. We remembered "Not Fade Away" being the highlight - the "best" ever. I've seen them plenty of times since(including 3-29-90)..but this show was the best ever !

This may be the cheesiest song the Dead ever performed next to Sugaree (and that's not a negative critique).

The lyrics are stupid as hell and the song lives for a few transcendental moments of hyper-deep swampfunk that's groovier than a dehydrated peyote button.

There are too many sweeter versions in 72 to overcome here but neverthless ... friggin noteworthy! BWHWHWHWWHHA!

This is one of the all-time great shows in the Dead's reign. The fact that the audio quality is this crisp and vibrant---makes it one of the BEST shows you will find in the Archive. Set aside some time and give this one your full attention. Truckin to open is insane...You know it's going to be a crazy nite when they bust that out...Half Step is cut in the middle but very good otherwise.Perfect BTW..Amazing Jed...The China>Rider is beautiful in it's approach...Playin is super slinky almost watery....GSET is primo.....But the real power and grace is shown during the MONSTER He's Gone->The Other One->Me And Bobby McGee->The Other One->Wharf Rat.....One of my FAVORITE WHARF RAT'S!!!!!!

ItâÂÂs a shame that such a great version of âÂÂTruckinâÂÂâ is represented there by low-quality audience recording. Fantastic beginning of the show, the jamming remains powerful all the way, finally reaching its climax at 7.35 â 7.55, and it really fires the crowd! ItâÂÂs a shame #2⦠The start of a decent show is totally spoiled, because in âÂÂLoserâ there are soundboard problems (remember âÂÂDead karaokeâ in 1974/05/19?). The other part of the show is good if not say more

âÂÂBrown-Eyed Womenâ is nice for 1972 but having compared it with later versions you understand that itâÂÂs nothing special. But one moment. This show is mixed in interesting way, lead guitar is in front, drowning the JerryâÂÂs vocals there, and IâÂÂm listening to this composition again and again, trying to follow instruments. âÂÂBlack-Throated Windâ is flawless, one of the best of the era in my opinion. The âÂÂBig Riverâ to my mind is a kind of model, it sounds joyful, easy and energetic - as it should sounds, by the way; Phil is a man again! It turned me on, though I donâÂÂt like this song very much. Go further⦠Intro in âÂÂChina Catâ is another thing to be noted in review. What a perfect drumming, what a transition to the first verse! ItâÂÂs absolutely terrific.

ItâÂÂs difficult to point out something from the jewels of the second set, because almost everything is great. Powerful âÂÂGreatest Storyâ with nice jamming, unique âÂÂHeâÂÂs Goneâ with slow soulful JerryâÂÂs leads, and then a 2-minute preparation to what was meant to be the highlight of the show â âÂÂDrumsâ with bass solo prepares you to the unforgettable stellar journey into cosmic depths - âÂÂThe Other Oneâ which varies from heart-stopping JerryâÂÂs work to jaws-dropping chaotic mix of sounds. Soft landing with âÂÂMe & Bobby McGeeâ canâÂÂt left yourself indifferent, for this insertion to psychedelic composition not only seems to be in the place there, but because itâÂÂs really nice.

What I like in âÂÂWharf Ratâ is atmosphere of loneliness and sorrow. Jerry puts everything in the singing, it captures you and doesnâÂÂt let go⦠Solo, beginning from 7.42, is incredible; this crying guitar left me speechless, I canâÂÂt tell you what I feel while listening to the song, it canâÂÂt be described by words. Last few seconds of the track (tunings) contains an interesting melody, by the way

Despite of the sound problems in the beginning I easily give this show 5 stars for the great mix and the great performance. PhilâÂÂs doing a great job during the concert and as many reviewers noted before: when Phil is on fire it means that the show is great

To be able to access almost every dead show ever played in a few seconds, and then have hardcore heads point out the highlights, and to go straight to them...this is so far beyond our wildest dreams when touring in the 80s.
I miss trading tapes...but not that much!

Damn, we may be going backwards in a lot of ways, but this site and the free sharing of these jams is proof that there IS progress on this planet!!!

wow! Phil was smokin' this night. When all the engines were steaming the Dead soared down the tracks unlike any other band. bobby's playing is perfect here, he really chomps the hell out of those chords. When Phil is on, the band is on. amazing.

I was at all three Stanleys. This was unquestionably the best of the three, though the other two were both really good. [See my review of 9-26.]

I don't understand why Dick picked the middle night over this and the Tuesday -- both are clearly superior.

The band were *really on* this night--from the first note. The Other One jam is iconic. This is a definitive version of where the boys were at w/r to Other One jams during this period. I would call it 'very jazzy'. It has a loose, jazzy feel that really works.

Be forewarned that the board has major problems for the first couple of songs, and that the first tune, Truckin, is not on the board. However, this is a long, robust show, and the few flaws that exist are vastly outweighed by the quality of the show that remains. Don't hesitate to download the show. I recommend that you download the audience parts also for completeness, as this is a benchmark show.

Wharf Rat, Sugar, NFA etc., are all exceptional. But that's true of pretty much every tune. Even Don't Ease Me In is a stand out! Terrific Brown Eyed Woman, Mississipi, etc. Too much to mention.

Im not sure how I missed these shows but I did ! having grown up in Jersey City and broke my cherry at Roosevelt Staduim shows weeks earlier, Even managed to sneak back stage 2 times in 74 This is truely one of GREAT movie houses of all time ......... The balcony just about touches the stage..... the rest we can all amagin...... loser is the 1st cut...... at first I thought it was an instrumental, jerry's mic is awol... but weirs guitar work is very special actully a great miscue. And that " other guy, the one with the beard he's pretty good" Thankx fellas

WHOA!!! I had a copy of the 2nd set years ago that was loaned out, or lost it---whatever...
My copy had the first 3-4 minutes after DRUMS looped & repeated for some reason, so you heard it twice. It is nice to be able to hear the whole show though.
Why this wasn't released on DP's instead of the 27th I'll never know. Not that the 27th isn't a GREAT, GREAT show. But IMO TOO on the 28th blows away the Dark Star on the 27th.
If you really like TOO, listen to 12/1/71 at the Boston Music Hall---another INCREDIBLE version. I can't say enough good things about this show---JUST LISTEN!!!

September 1972 is the most represented month in Dick's Picks, and it was only the beginning of the peak 25 months of the Dead's Billy the K era.
I just love Bill Kruetzmann. Bill, you are one of the swinginist mofos to grace the rock.
This Other One is a magical Phil & Bill ride... they meet a dark Jerry cloud who flies you to Jupiter, burns you to a crisp in Saturn and blows your ashes out the smokestack of a huge industrial factory in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

I've always been a Phil man, but this show gives me a whole new appreciation for Bobby Ace. He's way up in the mix, but not obnoxiously so, and puts out a great tutorial on rhythym guitar.

It's such a shame that Truckin' is AUD and that I Know You Rider is cut. They should have put this out instead of the 27th. I just got finished streaming it using SB Live and Wave Studio and putting it all back together in the proper order. I can't wait to actually hear the finished product. It's a shame that some of the more snobish trade boards won't let me post it but it will be on Further ASAP.

Galactic Redux

This was a fantastic show and the recording has great clarity - I've especially loved listening to Bob Weir's guitar work in this show - his counterpoint, tone and syncopation endeared me to this recording when I first got it back in the early 80's. That is secondary, though, to the heroic scope of the jams in the second set. Beginning with "He's Gone", the following musical journey through to the finish of "The Other One" is truly epic. I even wrote a paper about it back in a religious studies class 20 years ago- the class had to do with the idea of the Hero's Journey. I didn't have access to the other Jersey City shows to compare it with, so I thought it was stand-alone wonderful:


Another example of an ascent I found and enjoyed thinking about occurs in musical language. The Grateful Dead have incorporated into many of their musical statements the idea of the voyage and the journey. In one of the concert recordings I have dating back to September 28, 1972 the band played in their second set a series of linked songs (common to most of their concerts). Beginning with "The Other One", the music incorporates subtle excursions into the unknown with different musical themes popping up, some investigated, some discarded. As soon as Bob Weir finishes the opening lyrics to "The Other One", the music leads into a jam of chaotic noises, each member of the band contributing to the culmination of the cacophony. As this happens the listener is carried away ( or either repelled) to a landscape of infinite confusion and questioning, or perhaps to a place where utter chaos reigns, a parallel to our own journey through the different depths of our lives. The chaos builds to an excruciating pit, a depth from which there seems to be no hope, and suddenly it subsides, leaving an eerie space of wonder. Gathering strength with the memory of what had lust taken place, the band pulls itself back out of the depths with a new direction and the chords of "Me and Bobby McGee" begin. The song builds to a plateau of enlightenment and as soon as it ends, the music rushes back into the crazy tune of "The Other One.'

the vocals are turned down in the mix on loser until the last chorus,but the instruments sing for themselves.playing in the band just flows as does the other one.sound qual.is great for 72.get em before their gone.

Although this is the most experimental "Other One" of the week, I don't think it's the best. It's great though. Don't delete the "Loser."

If you never thought of Greatest Story Ever Told as a Jam song, listen to this one. Jerry goes into the Saint Stephen theme for a while.

Delete Loser (bad sound). Great show all around.

This show along with the preceeding 2 shows at the Stanley are great examples of how the Dead could keep up the intense energy level night after night. First set highlights this fact. Truckin' opener, great China>Rider and a mind blowing Playin'. It's amazing they could take Playin' to new heights within a short period of time.
Set II opens with an all-time Bertha>Greatest. Tremendous use of the wah-wah by Jerry. The main jam of the night comes via He's Gone>Other1>McGee>Other1. The Other1 goes all over the map and has Phil dropping numerous bombs, while Jerry is very dialed in to say the least. The closing NFA>GDTRFB>NFA is also very solid.

Not much I can add, except this show and the Dicks Picks of the other night, just might tempt you to move to Bobville with me!

Herr Dr was correct about this other one. It tosses and turns and Jerry peels your eyelids inside out with some of the jamming. Liked China>rider alot in the first set as well. Light some pichouli, turn the black light and strobe on really slow and huff a fattie to this you will not be disappointed.

What a great companion to dp 11. This is equal in my book. Bob is high in the mix and he shows is prowess as a rhythem man. The ultimate greatest story is here. The other one is a brain melter all the way. The whole show must be heard. The boys at their finest. what a great month

could'nt agree with my friend dr. flashback any more... this show is EASILY as big as the night before. the first set is real tight, with a killer Ease, a boss China/Rider, and the completely OUT version of Playin'... probably THE truely ALL-TIME versions of GSET gets the second set moving, and as has been said, the Other One is monstrous and will BUG YOU OUT... tread lightly my friends...

Dick's Picks released the night before at the Stanley, and it's great, go buy it!Has a Dark Star and Attics. But after repeated listenings, I like this show even better. The first set is flawed with Truckin missing, and Loser has some SBD problems. But the playing is high energy all the way, with rocking versions of Half Step, Big River and Tenn Jed. Of course a well jammed Playin. But the Other One is truly incredible. This is only 11 days after playing the super 45 minute version on 9/17, so they're really in the groove for this tune. A gorgeous mellow 20 minute jam ensues that just sparkles with Jerry and Phil weaving twin melody fragments around Bill's excellent drum work. Finally,they sing the verse. Then - fasten your safety belts, it gets really freaked out as Jerry plugs in the wah and absolutely makes the guitar walk and talk for about 4 minutes.But they bring you back with a sweet Bobby McGee and Wharf Rat.And I'm not a big Sugar Mag fan, but this version is ten minutes long and Jerry just burns it up on the wah-wah. A satisfying show in many ways.

Had the tape for a long time, but low quality SBD, now I'm in heaven. I had to put the set in order though, Not Fade Away>GDtRFD at the end to be happy with it, never sounded quite right with the NFA in the middle of the set. I'd rather break the He's Gone //> Jam > etc. But that's just me.
