Hampton is one of my favorite venues of all time! Grate location, general admission, nice and small. I've been to a boatload of shows but it just so happened that Spring of 87 was the only time I ordered the whole tour book. We didnt get tix for Hartford for some reason but saw all of the others. 1987 was an amazing year and this spring tour was freaking hot! The Hampton shows were the first East Coast Post-Coma shows and they blew the roof off the place all three nights! The show the night before played the BEST Scarlet=>Fire I've ever heard! Yes, ladies and gentlemen, better than Cornell 77!! I know, I know, Sacrilege!! And my friends remind me every time I bring it up but please, if you havent heard it already check it out. and enjoy this show as well cuz it smokes...

Like the entire Spring Tour of '87, this show was amazing. The energy from all of the shows in the '87 Spring Tour was unmatched at any other time, aside from '71-'72. If you want to "capture in a bottle" what a live Dead show was like for a friend who never had a chance to see them, this is the recording that will do it. Actually, any of the '87 Springtime shows will do it (Spectrum, Centrum, etc.). The energy of this tour never returned to the band unfortunately, and looking back, I took for granted what I was seeing during these short few months of '87.
As far as the highlights? They are all highlights at this show really. But there is ONE "super" highlight..... Stella Blue! In my humble opinion, it is the best Stella ever, and certainly the best Stella I've ever seen live in well over 100 shows.
Even though Dead shows are totally mind blowing on the whole, it's the performances of tunes like Stella Blue that leave you stunned, with your mouth hanging open, in complete disbelief at what you are experiencing. It's tunes like Stella that explain the reason for the Dead's following, and make you realize that it - The Dead - will NEVER happen again!

Subject: the booing before 2nd set tuning
Someone asked about the booing - its because someone threw a lightstick from near the stage phil side right up into the area where the band would be resting and preparing to come on. I was right next to the kid when he did it and he looked like he was all of 9 years old!
What stands out in my memory of this show was ths space>other one, where in my altered state, it sounded to me like 'the other one' was being played inverted, or sort of... backwards. One of my favorite weird moments in the years I followed from 77-88 :). Listenning to it now it still sounds great but not as backwards as I remember lol

one thing that stands out in my mind after listening to this one, is that Spoonful tease/jam in the middle of a nearly ass kickin truckin'. it soon however gets loose and loose slips into sloppy, which brings us to the jam into drumz..... i dont know if anyone else picked up on that.... but here's to happy listening!

This is a very nice audience recording and this show brings back some great memories. If only I could remember them:-). The Hampton Coliseum was one of my favorite places to see Dead shows and the series in 1987 was especially sweet. You had to love the parking lot scene and the stay at Gosnold State Park. These shows were always a great way to kick off spring.

I downloaded the shorten files for Truckin' and Feel Like a Stranger, used my computer equalizer to adjust, but could not fix the tin can sound of the vocals. Yes, it seems like a decent show, but you should be forewarned about the poor sounding vocals. Nothing to do with their voices, just the PA not right or something with the recording.

This is one of the best shows I've heard yet. It isn't in the setlist, or the performances, which are good, its in the ENERGY! Oh my God, I had goosebumps all through this.

Ok, now I found my fav show, i was confusing it with a Hartford show a couple days later or whatever. To respond to the other review, I think the booing at one point was cuz someone lit off an m-80 or something and recently at an East Coast show someone threw a bottle on stage and so forth so eberyone was trying to keep it mellow and this one jerk did that. I remember this show perfectly, and lemme tell you, the band, expecially Jerry ,was on fire. If I can get a SBD of the second set I will be stoked. The Jed was insane, and like the other guy said, there was crescendo after the next, the high point being Jerry post Truckin, and many other points. He said one time in an interview that sometimes he felt little on stage, other times like he was god , and this was one of the nights where his presensce was dominant and his playing was flawless, and he was beaming more than I had seen him and I saw lots shows between 83 and 92.

This site is full of surprises! Liked the Althea and the Stellar Truckin. Audience recording is good and the mikes were clearly high though maybe a touch far back - Listen to the animated crowd they are stoked...

1st Set: It appears that every town gets all up for "Touch." The crowd's roar raises the version, partially considering Jerry's forgetting whole stanzas. Though, he's the sole director behind "Rooster"'s halfway entry into interesting territory. Unfortunately Jerry's voice drags through "Althea," tho his instrument is worthy. "Uncle" Jerry's on, if only Bobby had some purposeful force behind his vocals this show would soon start smokin'. And "River" does get hot hot hot midway through. The set list might have changed to keep the place moving with an appreciatively rendered "Iko." A better "Tons" than 3-3 pops up next. Thumbs up to Lesh for grounding this slightly out of control but well received "Stranger." A lively "Ease" closes out this fun set.
2nd Set: Why the boo'ing? Anyhoo the crowd loves the announcement of "Box." Solid choice considering the communalism suggested by the tape. Too bad he's forgetting some lines, ehhh...it's nothin', you can feel everyone beamin. "Man Smart" effortlesly boogie's...they're there. The obligatory ballad "Ship" slows things down unnecessarily, But "Truckin" picks the steam back up. C'mon Bobby add some personality to your bleh vocals. The band's one tight unit!, and builds quite dramatically. "Drums" comes and goes from my memory. Uh oh, feel the storm clouds moving in on our sweet, unsuspecting crowd... YES. A generous heaping of my fave Bobby song leads to the saddest song west of "China Doll." "Stella" pleas for reconcilliation, and is so heartstopping lonely..."Throwing" is well-rendered if a tad rushed sounding. "Lovelight" is a nice change of pace, but a tad abbreviated. Crowd is certainly stoked. "US Blues" is standard, but the crowd certainly is going home tonight feeling pleased that they saw an above-average Grateful dead show.

holy crap! the energy at this show is unbelievable. Great audience show.
Great emotion throughout the show. The Touch opener just ROCKED! Jerry during IKO? he was in full hill-billy mode by then ripping the lyrics and the strings, after Bobby had laid the groundwork with a fully cowboy-energized Uncle/Big River.
it is crescendo after crescendo with this show. The stella is amazing, too.

oh my goodness, what a show and recording. I don't know if much out there can touch this show in the energy department for the '80's. Closest I've heard is some fall '83 and spring '85. And I haven't even finished the second set yet. If you want the quickest and best sample of this show before downloading, put on your headphones and stream Stranger starting at 1:00 and let run through 1:30. You'll hear an awesome sonic boom from Jerry and Phil when Jerry does his little guitar run around 1:20.

My fav of the first three east coast shows of the comeback tour, I remember being totally blown away. The boys were in good form. I remember thinking during the show that it sounded even better than the recently new cd format. One I'll never forget and one of the best Aud recordings around due to the fine wall of sound in the Hampton Coliseum. Download now for a good feel of what it was like

I remember skipping school and driving down to hampton for these shows. The dead blew my mind like only the dead could. During the other one I was taken up into a spaceship and beautiful alien woman took my seed to be planted all over the universe. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Another of the great shows from the comeback tour. Listening to them reminds me of how the boys were pretty tight and having a good time, like we were as well. The Truckin' on here stands out as among the best of the 80's.

This one of my favorite audience recordings ever. It sounds amazing. With emotions running high, the audience explodes into cheer during "Touch"..."I will survive!" Smokin'Aiko to boot. Highly worth the download. You'll listen to it over and over.
