Bobby breaks a string
I was sitting behind the stage at this show and Bobby broke a string during China Cat/Rider...he changed it while singing. It was really cool, roadies weren't paying attention so he had to yell several times and finally throw something to get their attention to bring him a string!

Totally hot for '79. The entire second set is worthy of your attention.
Sailor Saint is better 11/2.

Halloween
This is a very good show. I must admit that I give all shows from '79 good reviews because this is the year I got on the bus. How come Werewolves of London wasn't played on this Halloween Evening? I will give it 4 stars.

cool little nugget/ audience source after drums?
shakedown kills but the this source devolves into a near audience source on the composite balance during space, wharf rat, truckin. anyhow, i usually ignore 79 but this is nice and not too rinky-dink sounding.

Special one day only... oh no, you mean we have these at our leisure 24/7? No shit, this is pretty f#$@! hip man. Thank You Archive! Great show so far... only through Shakedown, but it is too slammin and jammin to not comment. Ever noticed the Voodoo child fans they throw in the huck and jive jams during shakedown? Other first set highlights include a Grate Brentrippfied River, a good cassidy and althea- jerry is shining on both. I have to say Bob kinda ruined sailor for me and Saint isn't as wild as I like it. Can't wait for the big second set roll out!
5 roses for it being an "unofficial" holiday
5 skulls... we're all lovin this night
4 stars only because I've heard the Oakland halloween w Neville Bros and that it the shizz

The theme of this show was, "black magic"
My name is Steve and I was working security on the board with Dan during this run of shows in NY.
During the show, Dan was having problems with the "board tape "recorder. The tape kept winding around the capstan and spinning on to the floor. He finally got fed up with it and grabbed the tape from the machine, wound it around the cassette and thru it under the board. On the tape was the end of the first set and the first 3 songs from set 2. After the show I asked Dan if I could have the tape.He looked under the board and disgustedly handed it to me. When I got home I edited out the damaged part of the tape and listened to a 1st gen master. About 35 mins..So for all you purest out there, I own a real part of the original master. The clarity of hearing the band members calling out to each other on stage, by last name,is hysterical.Bobby's joke of the night was...'What's the difference between a duck? He gave the answer after Lesh corrected him by saying, "it's the same as, what's the difference between a frog? answer, "one legs both the same" ha ha. Then Mickey goes into a "black magic" rant and they slide into one of the hottest Samson's I ever heard.
The 2nd set opener (Shakedown) was only appreciated after I got home and listened to the repaired tape. The clarity of this piece of musical history is unheralded.I will try to figure out a way to post it for your listening pleasure.BTW it's almost 30 years later and it plays like I heard it live last night. Analog rules.(sometimes)

Song list is totally jumbled which is annoying but this crowd is into it and agree Phil in particular is funny - Pretty rare to hear Jer pleading with the crowd to move back. Est>Eyes drums>space>Truckin is unbelievable - You will love this. Set II is f*ckng awesome...

One of the best '79 shows...
Definately a very good show. The Shakedown is super funky and will really get you in a groove. Definately worth the download for this alone. Plus the Dead always kicked it up a notch for Halloween shows.

Phil!!!
I think this show tends to get unfairly overshadowed not only by what preceded it (the Cape Cod run) but also by the remaining two shows of this run. This may be due in part to the fact that the soundboard portions of this show haven't been in circulation as long as some of the other nights. In retrospect, this show holds up as well as 11-2-79 and is perhaps a better all around show than 11-1-79 (although the Scarlet->Fire is unreal). Everything here is performed with that special energy that is pervasive on this tour. Gotta love fall '79. Phil just kills!

About the Setlist and the Show
When you open the individual song files they are ordered alphabetically. You'll need to give them the correct track order as advised by the reviewer below.
This is a great recording and the boys blow off the roof. Shakedown absolutely rocks, pops and bebops like no other. The show is hot! Phil really lets loose, Brent is funky and keeps pace, Bobby shines and Jerry rips it up!! I would love to give this download a 5 but I'm being restrained here. My hats off to the little man behind the curtain at the Archive. Wow, good stuff.

Happy Halloween
China Rider is a nice opener, but not spectacular. Everything is solid.
One of the coolest 70's Shakedowns. Brent gets funky, Bobby sounds like he's teasing Ghostbusters (you know you love it). Passenger is way hot. Estimated>Eyes is sweet, Eyes is fast as hell. Wharf Rat>Truckin' closer is a good choice.
