Fire epitomizes summer surf sessions on glassy days across the Golden State
Anyone who has ever hung out along the California coast from Bolinas to Sunset Cliffs will recognize what Jerry has done with this Fire. It is a meditation on late fall and winter vibes along our Golden state. Truly sublime and evocative of mood/ethos that can't be conveyed in words..Kerouac and Wolfe and others have tried but its Jerry and Bobby who from the chill experience of our Pacific

Wow. Just wow. Jerry and Bob's voices, Donna's voice - they are so on ! Donna gave me the chills on This Heart. The Scarlet-Fire jams are insane. I'm searching the Web to purchase this show...
Happy listening. ... and God bless...

Scarlet Redux
This is not a rockin Scarlet jam but a very intricate and meditative version that circles the stars and back. A chill Scarlet>Fire, yes but that does not always mean it's to be ignored, because it is brilliant!

Fire burning out
Based on some comments, I listened to the Scarlet>Fire here and found it overrated. Good but hardly the shimmering number I'd been led to expect. I will check out the Fox show ref'd by another reviewer. In the meantime, for a seriously smoking Scarlet>Fire, check out MSG on 9/5/80. Also, for downloadable shows, see
sugarmegs.org. They're offline now (June 08) but will be up soon.

"...They May Not Be The Best At What They Do
But They're The Only Ones That Do What They Do."
This was Bill Graham's pre-second set introduction of the band. Prior to this introduction was his public announcement of the closing of Winterland.
Also of note is Billy speaking up during the opening portion of the first set and introducing Hamza El-din. I believe this was the only time I ever heard Billy address the audience.
Sound and Performance, this is a great concert from beginning to end - especially every single dazzling dream note of the second set. It was my fifth straight night of attendance at Winterland. All shows were 5 star rated except Friday warranted a 4 star. My rating: in descending order: Tuesday (17th)is my favorite, next Saturday(21st)and Sunday(22nd), then Wednesday (18th), then Friday (20th). Sunday seems like a continuation of Saturday.
JBG final encore= band's acknowledgment that they didn't suck.
*** Some minor low end distortion during the Drumz>NFA, GDTRFB and JBG at high gain. Will make your woofers chirp, you betcha.

Jack Straw
Jack Straw has never been my favorite, but this one is fierce and passionate. Yikes, it almost scared me. Might have to reevaluate.

This Scarlet Is Weak
I haven't listened to the rest of this tape yet, but the Scarlet is weak. Jerry was uninspired, at best, and actually he was way off in many places. Hit some notes in the wrong scale and provided very little leadership in the jam. It just kind of fades away.
For a truly inspired Scarlet Begonias, try Fox Atlanta 11/30/80.

How I miss the silver dragons
This was one hot show, and for my 3rd, I was totally blown away. The dragons were the flavor of the week, red, silver, blue. I miss the caves of Winterland, what a strange place to dose.

Fire on the Mountain
I actually had this Fire on the Mountain before discovering this great site. I don't what it is, but this one song from this one show seems 3D. I'm now really interested in how all the instruments were MICed and how they were panned in the rrecording process. Just listen to the first 30 seconds and maybe you'll hear it to. It's as if their are 2 more speakers behind you... Really cool to say the least.
Just for this one thing I think this show deserves a download.

it is hard to pick a favorite part of this but the caution>mojo jam stands alone - excellent 1st set and positively incandescent set II especially after drums makes this a must!
