I just found a video of this show on Youtube; it was fun to watch, and a much better show than I thought when I was there. A couple notes:
Visions of Johanna- great to watch Jerry close up as he sings this. Also- Mickey got up from his kit and just played tambourine; it's a nice subtlety
Truckin'- At the time we thought Bob was having lyric issues, but he was actually having microphone issues. The bonus jams are frustration release, before he finally walked over to Phil's mic.

I didn't realize that there were shows this good in 1986. It's nothing over the top or mindblowing, but it's solid front to back. The second set is a lot of fun, and the Playin' and Black Peter are especially nice. Phenomenal sound quality for an AUD.

All three nights are epic. Where it lacks in quality it makes up for one of the best Grateful Deads concerts ive ever heard. I especially like the way Bobby and Jerry are playing together. It sounds like they are going by sheer momentum and volume.A show with alot of power. It sounds different, They broke new ground at these shows. The boys brought the 'thunder' this night.

I like this show a lot. The opening 3 in the second set are sweet. Bobby breaks a string or forgets the words in Truckin(what else is new) so the band opts for a nice 2 min bonus riff right in the middle. Priceless

one of the best playing in the bands of the 80's. and of course visions is sweet. missing the lyricism (musically, not the words) that jerry pours in songs like visions is missing part of his genius. still, this was on the way to jerry going comatose. energy was weird all through that year until he got sick.

and you can year it in these performances before the stadium shows with Dylan and relapses again.
April 86 was a grate festive time for the Dead my older brother did a miny tour with his friends from mid~west and hit every show from Hampton to last show in Hartford and said these were his favorite when he got back home. Both in fun at the shows meaning scene and music played. His First shows were Alpine 85 I was still a little too young and dumb listening to Metallica and Motley Crue in 7th grade while he was telling me how awesome the Dead were and that I should just check it out but my friends and I would laugh and see them off with there tye dyes and what not and here about it whwn He got back from these little miny tour jaunts. I finally jumped in head first and camped out 4 nights at '88 Alpine and went straight to Dead Head Heaven and never looked back. Anyway a little memory lane but, I do remember him and his 3 or 4 Dead Neophyte friends at the time clearly all agreed this was the highlight of there trip. To this day I never really checked out the Hampton shows even after years of xl2s tape trading and knowing what they were all saying about this leg of the tour. I tribute that to mainly staying away from the 1986 tour pre coma Jerrys tired leaving the stage during songs to pee having problems with de-hydrating short sets etc. The Spring was the time this year and its time for me to check it out. I just read Blair Jackson's "Garcia" on vaca and re called what my brother was sayin' I gotta bust out some nug sit back and enjoy.
All aboard first stop Hampton.

I missed this gig and regret not mamking the effort to get down there... I stream before I download and all I needed was to hear the China Rider and Playin'.. man, that makes this download worth it right there.. Jerry is snappy and tight, the Playin' gets nice and trippy, but far from lazy... I'm hurt that Bobby felt it was right to pull all these SBD from us, but I am SO thankful that the Tapers had such skill at making awesome recordings. I am enjoyoing these high Quality auds very much!!! Thanks guys!!
This recording IMHO is very good.. very upbeat rockin' dead, nothing to lay in bed and try and drift to sleep with, this is for when are hitting your stride and want to be stoked, this works well for that, enjoy!!

Forget Visions of Johanna. The China Cat is the reason to download this. Jerry just attacks it. You can hear it from his first licks this is going to be special. Then it builds to a hair-raising climax. But then again, from the opening tune "Stranger", you can hear this is going to be a special night. Some audience recordings sound over-the-top good, and this is one. It's especially good for '86, which is a hit-and-miss period for them.

When Visions was played, I knew it was a Jerry type of tune yet I turned to my wife and said "sounds like a Dylan tune" tons of lyrics and deep in thought, felt the same way at Richmend 85' with She Belongs to me. I loved it! Okay First Set and a nice second set here, nothin spectactular except Jerry treating my ears to the sweet sounds of his guitar, Bobby appeared in good shape too, they were a good pair to watch. The better of the three nights,Hampton has it's unique sound and always a great place to twirl around no matter where you were. Recording 4 performance4

This show is a must have. Having been at all 3 Hampton shows, the venue was 1/2 full the first night (Wed), think it was the first east coast show on the tour but it had a laid back West coast feel. Stagger Lee is tight and sweet, Jerry smokes on Visions. Quinn is one of the best I've heard The Boys play. Phil's bass was blasting hard and clean. Incredible sound. I am uploading my aud masters from dbxI analogs as they sound better than this source. Enjoy.

I disagree with the previous review in that I say it is worth the download in spite of visions of johanna. That was a low point of the show for me as it is a slow song with no jam and brought the energy level down unless you were a huge Dylan fan. I feel the same way about "she belongs to me" they are both energy suckers. All in all a great show with the now predictable opener of second set, China> rider My fuzzy memory tells me there were several lazy lightning teases in the first and second set. I know it was at this run but have not had a chance to listen back closely.
