What a great Show
I regret not driving from Atlanta to see this. I first heard the Iko jam either on the radio or on a bootleg tape. Either way, I was drawn in and find the rest of the show to be great, too.
But the Jerry/Bob space jam into Iko is just the best!

Another gem from 1982
Summer and fall of 1982 have some serious gems. Wasn't able to catch a ton of shows that year [law school made fall and spring shows impossible- - well other than Des Moines on 12/7/81]. So I missed this one, but really enjoyed the Iowa City and Kansas City shows. This may be the best of the bunch. Not necessarily the greatest version of any particular tune. Just solid from start to finish. No rating because I wasn't there. But if I had been, I suspect this one would be screaming for me to give it one of those elusive [for me] five star ratings!!!

Another show that I had shortly after it was played, mostly because it had the LSD first set-ender. I should probably have been keeping track each time that has occurred....

Broken ankle and all....
I attended this Concert (and the next nite's in Md.) with a broken ankle from the previous weeks softball game when I slid into 2nd base and snapped it. Pain Meds and a BIG 'ole bag of 'Shrooms were totally needed to get my crutchtified ass thru both concerts. After the nights performance, Stich (my friend who was also from Charlieville who drove me to the next show in Landover by actually following THE Bus.....believe me, it was the ONLY way we were going to find our way there, tee-hee. T'was truly a mind-blowing two days. I am sure glad both shows were recorded because all the memories I have from them two days have trails.

Can't Believe It
As a current UVA student I find it hard to believe the Dead only came to Charlottesville once in their career, yet went to William and Mary at least 3 times. Still, it's a pretty good show. I did get the chance to see Furthur about a year ago, and I guess that's the closest thing I'll ever get to seeing them. By the way, if anyone has the poster from this show I would die to have it. I managed to get myself a few Furthur promo posters off the UTS buses, and I think it would add nicely to my little collection.

Dead and Lovin' It
Wow, the memories... This was my first Grateful Dead concert. I was on the floor 13 feet from the stage. I forgot about the heat, but reading the other reviews brought back a flood of memories. I had my shirt tied around my waist and at the break, someone started passing a big cardboard box of ice around. Really, the break is when the floor cleared out and I managed to get so close to the stage for the second set. Ahh... that ice was like a Godsend. And the recording is ricking like hell. I'm listening to it now. All that talk about bacon... you'd think some of you folks don't remember vinyl. Not too damn bad, not bad at all. Thanks for the memories!

Clam shell
For the people who have not been there - U-Hall has a clam shell shaped top which is pretty cool. I was up in the rafters for my first show here at age 16. Was given a ticket by a HS classmate who had to play soccer. I don't remember it being overly hot up there. One thing I do remember that was pretty funny was that they turned the house lights on at "sometimes the lights all shinin' on me". The show absolutely smoked, and it was hard to find a good copy of this show on tape for a long time. But by '84 I had a nice Aud. of the 2nd set. The other thing I remember is that the first person I saw in the parking lot was my 5th grade teacher wearing a completely tie-dyed suit. "There's your sign!"
The Dead stayed at the 'Boar's Head' which had to be at least somewhat amusing for Garcia as that was one of the places in SF where he started playing. They hung at the bar after the show with a few heads in peace.
It is amazing that Chris got this show booked, but the town was very cool at the time. You could park your car on Main St., in broad daylight, plunk .25 in a meter, leaving your executive TM leaning against the seat in the console and nobody cared. What happened All American City caught the US Blues?

"Crackling Jack"
"Sounds like the taper was frying bacon below the mics during Jack Straw." << LOL!
I love this show! Boy it sure would be a nice bonus if the SBD of the first set ever materialized, but the AUD is great to have anyway.
Note, for example, Brent's playing particularly during the second set, even more particularly during China Cat and the China > Rider transition. But and however the whole band is just ON throughout.
Lots of folks have a hard time digging the sound of the SBDs from 82, in particular, and they are notoriously lacking in clear Phil (or sometimes his bass is altogether absent in the mix). A function apparently of the tapes recording only the stuff being amplified through the PA.
It's a different SBD mix than typical SBDs from other years, but shouldn't be dismissed out-of-hand because there is some truly spectacular playing captured on these recordings. Tight, highly sensitive ensemble improvisation at it's finest! And this is one of the 82 SBDs where you actually can hear Phil fairly well in the mix, which is an added bonus.

This and 4/83 Hampton are my favorite shows ever. I've been to a shitload. This was the smallest place I've seen them at. The sound, atmosphere, tightness, list, whatever it was, just phenom to me. I was in the Navy when I saw both and a bunch more.

Mr. Jefferson Would be Proud
This is a great show for a number of reasons, featuring excellent recording quality and tons of hot jams. The setlist is typical of the early 80s with several great tunes that dropped out the rotation in later years (
e.g., Big RR Blues and LL/Supplication). As Jerry goes, so goes the band and on this one Jerry is just hot, hot hot. Some critics turn their noses up at 80s shows, but this one illustrates how the Dead could still kick out the jams at that time.
I am from Northern Va. and my first show was Hampton 4/14/84, so this predates it by about a year and a half. I was fortunate to see 86 shows (+ approx. 15 JGB), but I wish I could have been at this one.

Decent show, but overrated imo
I was there as a student, too. As reported by the esteemed mfgraham (hi Michael!), this was a hot, hot night... it was ~98.6 degrees in UHall. The show left me underwhelmed, however; I thought the heat and humidity took a toll on the band's energy level. The next night at air-conditioned Cap Centre was, by far, the superior performance. Great Aiko, though, and the last half of the first set ripped.
BTW, there is/was no such thing as "Scott Gym". The show was at U.Hall.

I ushered this show - mistake
Somehow some of my frat bros (TKE) convinced me to get in free by ushering the show and thereby agreeing to wear a stupid yellow shirt. It was my first Dead show as a second year student at UVA. Of course I had no desire to monitor the crowd and I probably should have ditched the shirt. Anyway, it was a drag for me but it is nice to listen to the show now as it certainly is excellent. It's amazing how being the focus of hostility and paranoia can be a buzz kill. I did hear that for some reason the process of The Dead playing at U-Hall (mem gym would have been for about 500 people)was not smooth and Jerry et al swore they would never play there again.

Hot Gym
This was one of my all time favorites. It was at a round building called the Scott Gymnasium, I recall. Hot and humid inside, almost too much to take...until during He's Gone, right at the point of "Hot as a pistle but cool inside", just then a cool, chilling breeze shot through the building and everybody went "Ahh", just one of those moments.

This was definitely at U-Hall
I know - I was there. It was a hot night and a hotter show. What I remember most vividly was being pressed close to the stage as Jerry and Bob did the wonderfully light "Aiko" jam out of space. I had just finished my undergrad degree that May, but wasn't ready to leave C'ville yet. This is the only time the Dead ever played there. Kudos to Chris Munson and Al Hinton for booking the show.

downloading AUD portion of this show
Great show at my alma mater; I definitely agree with the "High Time" comments below. I have heard that this was at Memorial Gymnasium, not University Hall, but I really don't know.
Since the 2nd set SBD is posted separately on this site, could it be chopped off of this version so the 1st set AUD could be downloaded? I only had downloaded the 2nd set SBD before "it" happened.

If only I'd known
I arrived at college in August '86. Short hair, drinkin beer, a Kansas kid not sure what he was getting into. At the same time my cousin was in California. I went to see him and saw two Kaiser Shows. Most of the next 2 years saw me wandering around with longer and longer hair, alienated from the frat system, taking solace in nightly bootlegs (and supplements), trying to be a writer, and jumping ship as much as I could to see shows. I think if I'd known the Dead had played such a notable show in Charlosttesville, it might have provided some solace, made the place seem more like my own. But no, I didn't find out until 2005. Does anyone know if this was U-Hall or the old gym? Interestingly, after my Kaiser indoctrination, I came back and played the greatest game of intramural basketball in my life in the old gym. Could not miss! Maybe the residue was still there from '82 connecting with my Kaiser vibe.

One my favorite versions. How awesome and Lucky are the few who attended what a treat. I can barely imagine how cool this would have been. Almost seems ridiculious. Man, Jerry sounds so sweet on this High Time his voice and passion is so killer. What a night for the Dead and its fans at the time.
Ps The voice effect on some of the songs is pretty cool like on "wish I was a headlight ...".

Hitched down form the Eastern Shore of MD. Supposed to be in school. I suppose i couldn't call it my mispent youth otherwise. This is a veterans show in my mind. There were enough highlights subtle and otherwise that would have been lost on a rookie. I agree with a previous review in that the Audience version is kickin.....So where is the rest of it? The second half is SB.
I was at the Iowa Field House the month before. This night reminded me of it. maybe it's the lineup. The Dead on campus......

Dead Lay Waste To Scott Gym.
Of the 140 Grateful dead shows I was lucky enough to see, this is easily my favorite. Small, sweaty gym,Tuesday night, and they blew the roof of the joint. They set the stage up lengthwise rather than the usual end stage set up, which made for a very cozy atmosphere, seemed to be much eye contact between audience and band. And Phil smoking one of his stage monitors at the end of "I Know You Rider" gives an indication that this was one of those nights. The comment I remember someone saying on the way out,a refernce to how hot(temperature)it was inside was "I'll toot out anybody who has a crisp bill."

Great Beginners Show
When I was in College there was a non credited class on the Dead for beginners and this was the 1st show they handed out. Burn this and give it to non fans to show them what goes on at a show. Not really jammed out but outside of Jazz fans no one really should start off with 30 minute Dark Stars. A little bit of everything is represented. The Space>Aiko is the high point.

great show, incredible 2nd set
the first set is very well played and the sound quality is good. the second set is unbelievable. 6 tunes before drums and 6 more after space!!? the transition jam from china to rider is the best version i've heard. also, if you're just checking out this show, you gotta hear aiko, d2t6. the beginning is the jam out of space into aiko and is mainly just bob and jerry. it is one of the coolest jams i've ever heard. the end of the set with miracle and bertha kicks it on out. then, bob states, "we're gonna rock on outta here" as they do johnny b. goode. definitely one for the 82 collection. i'd give this show more than 5 if i could.
