Subject: 31+ years later and still so very sweet

Loved this show then, love this show now. Took biz law mid-term in the a.m. Made the ride from Atlanta to Birmingham. My buddy dosed on some blotter he bought from a girl named Sunshine in the park across from the auditorium while I took cover in a bag of good weed, a 'lude, and some of my favorite alkaloid. And with our heads so aligned, we took in this show from the first notes of Alabama Getaway to the ever so sweet and rocking GDTRFB encore. Then it was back to Atlanta [with a far less substance addled buddy at the wheel] so we could catch the next night's show in our "home theater". Was this the perfect show? No. But it was played with energy and passion and there was an electricity to it that I felt that night and still feel whenever I listen to the disk I burned about 15 years ago. What I'd give for one more night like this, albeit sans the substances....

Subject: Feel like a stranger....??????

IS that the west coast horsie women I hear sounding like sirens in the background of this rec?? DOes anyone remember them they used to go off...at least in the bay area shows. We were teenagers and we called them the horsie women cause they would totally get off on the music and writhe in pure bliss...such a great element of the circus!!

Subject: The new DEAD

Really great aud recording of a fantastic early 80's show. The Alabama>Promised opener is a ball of energy. LLR is good, as well as Tenn Jed and an early Stranger >Deal closer. The second set is well played throughout..China>Rider, He's Gone short but intense Other One. Love the GDTRFB.
Well worth your time.

Subject: death dont have no mercy

The reason for the unusual encore of Goin Down the Road was that Soundman Dan Healy had just received word of his father's passing and was heading back to Cal after the show. He returned to the tour in Baltimore (the sound suffered at shows in between). Dan was in tears on the board as the boys sent him home with this salute. It was also evident in other song choices that nite such as He's Gone, Black Peter and I know you Rider.

Subject: Sweeet Aud

This is one of the better Auds I have heard. Crisp, with lots of nice stereo separation and the crown noise is not overwhelming. Rather, it is a nice addition. When done well, like this recording was, Auds are so much better than the oft lifeless SBD mixes. Not rip on SBD's, because I'll pick those over even a decent Aud, but every now and then a gem like this show comes along and makes me happy that tapers loved us enough to tape ;)

Of course, the performance is also top notch, which makes it that much better. Fans of Brent (like myself) will indeed be pleased.

Very much worth a DL.

Subject: Who's hating on Brent ?

He earned that thrown He's Jerry's equal for a keyboardist, He's the Man the mack ultimate, jedi, ninga, master, stealth, king of Hammond B3 and old school trippy Atari bell & buzzers.

If anyone's hating, hate on Vince!
with his carasouel bubble gum pop casio sound. His songs suck and His singing always sucked. Like someone mentioned in another review. Who decided to hire Vince to take that seat. Worst GD decision ever made. They lost Brent hired a new keyboarder and back on tour in 1 month. I went to those Ohio shows and the Philly 90 and I'll I can say is they should of waited.

ps This show is sweet and sounds perfect.

Subject: short tunes O.K.

Yeah I love lengthy jams--what Head doesn't. That's why my collection is chock full of 72-77's but it is fun for variety to have short-song oriented shows too. Great for times like errand trips around town ('cause I hate to interrupt Jerry with stops, phone calls etc.) or introducing newbies. It's both pointless and a sacrelege to try and lay a '74 Dark Star or a '69 Alligator>Caution on a mind that is not yet open. Anyway, This show is totally juiced too. Dig it!

One other thang. A previous post called this the last trip to Alabama. They returned to Birmingham in April '95. No Getaway though.

This is a nice AUD recording of a very high energy show from the boys. Highlights are China Rider and a BLISTERING Althea.

Subject: Alabama Getaway

If you can get past the typical early 80's aud recording sound, this is a very good show. All the songs are very short, but played with a degree of ferocity rarely seen in 1980.

Go To Heaven had just been released, so they started the tour in Alabama. The obvious opener was Alabama and it one of the show's highlights. The othe highlight for me is the ripping, but extremely short China>Rider Samson sequence. It is scorching. Finally, the Going Down the Road encore is unique and again short, but sweet.

This is a gem - great first set and from the looks of it not much listened to... Great first set and powerful set II especially china>rider rippppping other one with a cool lead in+++ The finale is Winterland caliber. They had a nice little run there between '77 and '80 sadly, this was the last show they ever played in Alabama.

Subject: get this show!

Dont let the typical early 80's set list foll you. This is a great show and a good recording. The band is in great spirit and Jerry is on fire! I met Jerry and Bob out behind Boutwell before the show, they signed our copies of "Go To Heaven" we had just picked up down the street, and hung around out behind the venue chatting and allowing photo ops. We then snuck in to the room to watch Phil set up and play solo for a while. He stopped to chat with us from the stage and was equally freindly and interested in hearing from us tour folks. We went out front and shared the shopping bag full of mushrooms we had just picked somewhere in no. Florida with anyone who was interested, then went in to see one of the best shows on the year!
