Holy smokes that's a fast Touch of Grey and it seems to accelerate as it wears on. The whole first set has a rushed feel that seems to wear off for the second...I saw Crosby Still Nash play at Irvine Meadows in 1983 and David Crosby was busted the next day for possession of cocaine. Just saying.

I saw Jerrys feet leave the rug
Without a doubt one of the fondest memories of Jerry, during the jam of Dear Mr. Fantasy Jerry was so into it he jumped up while jammin, wasn't a zap, he was having so much fun that night.
An excellent show

borderline psychotic, homicidal Space into a spiritual, gospel-like Fantasy. April was always a magical month for the guys 79 on

Great Sugaree!
This is probably the weaker of the two Irvine shows IMO. There are some really nice moments including a rare Gloria but overall the playing isn't as focused as on the 13th.
The first set is very brief but most of the songs are played very well including an excellent Sugaree. The show starts off with an energetic Touch but the vocals are a touch rough. This segues into a very energetic Bucket that features some hot leads from Jerry. Sugaree is next and is the highlight of the whole show. Jerry sounds great and the second jam is epic, featuring amazing lead work. This version has to be heard. The rest of the set is competent but brief without anything too exciting except the Looks Like Rain. This is a great version, featuring passionate emotional vocals from Bobby and excellent leads from Garcia, especially dring the songs climax. Another highlight that everyone should hear.
The second set starts off with an uneventful Miracle but things heat up with a nice China>Rider. The transition jam in particular is very strong. Man Smart is bouncy and fun segueing into a mediocre He's Gone that has an interesting outro jam that leads into drums. Post Space is pretty uneventful but does feature a brief yet very energetic and inspired Other One. Primal! Wharf Rat features some brutal vocals but nice instrumentation before segueing into a rousong Sugar Mags to close the show.

1000 micrograms to the head
This was a great show to dose at. Most of the drunks wore themselves out the night before, and there was nice room to move around in Orch left, I think 10th row or so. The band was absolutely on fire, and playing at top speed all night. It felt like it was raining during LLR (it wasn't, just acid rain) and there were these amazing waves of bass emanating from the stage during Space. Gloria was like the reward for surviving the trip, which was really hard at some points. Some tough white blotter that evening.
My favorite memory is the guy standing stock still during the foot-flyin' Sugar Mag jam, with his arms stretched out sideways and his palms upturned as if to say "what is this?"

Looks Like OK
Looks Like Rain fans. not bad...Jerry does some drippy martian jelly guitar work. My fave though is from 10-10-82 Stanford. The band really swings it and Weir hits the verse vocal cues hard.

WOW!!! Un-freakin'-believeable!
Man, they start the generator up in the Touch and just hit the ground RUNNING on this one! The Touch is so groovy it makes the Bucket seem like a lite little ditty; a reprieve from the fever pace set by the Touch. Nice early version back-up vocals in Touch, too. Bucket is tight and funky-chunky, just the way you like it. Jerry takes back over with a Sugaree that rolls in like an old friend. Down in the Bottom/ Superstitious keeps the funk rubbin' on it, and the B. E. Women is sooo tight... Garcia is, of course, the man- his runs are catastrophic in here. The railroad song/americana/blues theme continues with Tons of Steel (nice early vocal work in here) and Big RxR (Jerry's playing is crisp but vocals are a bit weak- probably the one song you can skip on set 1). L. L. Rain is very sincere with powerful phrasing from Garcia, and don't even get me started on the Don't Ease. Sick, sick first set. The second set, well... you've probably got the DeadBase in front of you, so you know what that's like. All I can say is, hell's yes! Download this puppy- it's a definite keeper.

Looks Like Rain
as the other reviews state this is a great first set but imho what really makes it special is the Looks Like Rain, has to be one of the best ever performed! It sends chills down my spine and I will argue with anybody that it is prolly the best ever, although there are many, many great versions this is the greatest of them all!

DOWN IN THE SUPERSTITIOUS BOTTOM.....
Vintage 85...a tad speedy...Jerry's lick's are all but flawless, yet the vocals as strong and heart-felt as they are, indicate a bit of illness I am so sad to write. But in a way, this is what trademarked this 85 sound, on the verge of utter harmonious excellence, but like every silver lining, a touch of gray tainted the colored canvas of charismatic addict-induced phenomenal foundation of fun-filled phil-zoned phanatical flawleshlessness?!@#$%^&*I started to give this 4 stars...for being speedy, but this is just the sound they had this time around and upon further review, I give it 5 stars...Jerry is on. Brent is out there especially on Looks like Rain...which I never thought I would comment on...well, now it's out of space and I'm listening to Fantasy....

No ho here
The 1st set may not look interesting on paper, but holy mackerel were they SMOKIN! Absolutely furious playing in the 1st set.
The presence of a Gloria usually indicates the band having a great time, and this night was no exception.

A rip-roaring '85 2nd set. I only give it 4 because of the ho-hum 1st set.
