I just want to cry Sitting On Top Of The World isn't on DP30, it was so rarely done. What a ballsy skkkkorcher was thine!!! Alas, twas not to be. That Slow Blues and Pollution by Bo are fabulous on the Hanno Bunjes - Jake Horner copy. Why in god's name would anybody need one more OMSN, BEW, SugMag, or PITB (though this one is one of the best I've ever heard - and the shortest)??? It's a mighty good show but, My god, this could have been one of the best Blues and Rock & Roll albums in history. Dick, yah goofed (RIP). Anybody know if the missing stuff might have been featured on the Dead Hour? Priceless story oh uh um ah. Thanx.

poor sound loses a star, but there's definitely a sense of sitting in the crowd, (well maybe being in the bathroom and still being able to hear the show), but Bob does do a heartfelt LLR is it the first? This is a taste of old 60s Dead one last time for NYC, before jetting off to Europe.

Was this the show billed as Jerry Garcia and Friends ?
Was there not a huge Spotlight going all the way up to the night sky ?

Ah yes, the 14th Street Theater, the Paramount, the Academy of Music...the same place with different names for different people for different times.

I went to this show with my friend John M. from Brooklyn. Just a couple of 16-17 year old freaks hangin' out.

We got to the show early and stood in line.

I remember seeing the Hell's Angel's choppers parked on 14th street outside the theater.

Handmade hard-tail bikes; some were hogs, some were choppers, some were works of art, some looked like they were ridden hard.

Everyone was in awe of these motorcycles and not one person dared to go near them much less think about touching one.

When it got dark and the show was about to begin a Stagecoach with four black horses drove down cobblestoned 14th Street and it stopped in front of the Academy of Music.

Two Hell's Angel's were sitting up top. One Hell's Angel was the Stagecoach driver and the other was riding shot-gun, with a real F'n shot-gun!

The Stagecoach door opened and a Hell's Angel got out with a dolled up babe, looking real fine and sexy on his arm. I guess he was President or Vice President of the East Coast Chapter from 2nd Avenue, or maybe he was the Sgt of Arms, but whoever he was he was a big-shot, with all the power.

They got out of the Stagecoach and walked into the theater. A short while later the theater doors opened and they let the rest of us in.

The first 30-40 rows of the orchestra seats were reserved for the Hell's Angels. I never went down stairs....No one was rushing the stage this night, that's for sure.

My seat was way up in the third balcony. The place was huge, with 3 or four balconies.(Thank God)

The place was packed with all kinds of Freaks, Hippies, and "other folks". But we were all the same that night, we were all fans of the GRATEFUL DEAD.

All I can tell you is the show was incredible.

Hallucinogenics gave the show a whole other dimension. They also gave NYC and the subway system a whole other dimension too.

I remember the mirror ball hanging down and spinning from the ceiling getting hit with a focused white spot and making stars flash all over the audience,stage, walls and ceiling.

When the show ended we took the stairs down to the main floor where the orchestra seats were. There we found a few Hell's Angels passed out on the floor. We carefully walked by them and out to the street.

It was another time, another universe. Did it happen? This recording is proof it did.

After the show the 14th Street Subway Station platforms were filled with hippies and freaks heading home. What a sight to see!

Too bad the audio quality for this show is in the toilet here on the IA.

Get DP #30 it's worth it. I don't get any money for recommending it either.

I bought DICK'S PICKS #30. I guess if you want it, you gotta pay for it.

Maybe someday someone will put the entire show on the Internet Archive?

Usually I try not to let the sound of a show lower my rating of a show by more than one star or so, but in this case it is impossible. The sound is so bad that it is really hard to hear everything correctly. It's an interesting setlist, the Bo Diddly stuff is very intriguing, and there's a pretty nice LLR and How Sweet It is snuck in there. I'm fairly certain if I was actually able to hear this well, this here show would be a good 4-5 star show. However, the sound is so awful that I cannot give it more than 2 stars.

Is there any special guest's at this show?I noticed the *'s @ the mona.Was john cippollina here perhap's?You can't hear the mona on this version,oh well,@ for all you who complain about sound quality,just be glad it was recorded in the first place.Recording's were pretty primative back then.I got some knew imfo since I asked this question from my friend's at deadhook forumn's.This is fo all the people complaining about sound quality.Hell's angel party,First set with bo diddley,first show with donna as a member,First bo diddley song,final mannish boy,only take it off,first mona,only wow wow hey hey,only pollution,only 18 children,only are you lonely for me,only how sweet it is.You ought to be glad this never to be played again music was recorded. shame on you for complaining,shame, shame, shame on you.Enjoy the music @ quit complaining.

You should not rate official recordings here! If you have something to say, tell us about this recording. Which is not too good(concerning the recording, not the performance!), but who really cares?? I think we are all a little bit nostalgic, and we should be lucky, that these audience recordings survived. At least, they allow a view back to the good (better?) times we experienced (or in my case: whished to have experienced). Listen to this and be happy, or just leave it, itÃÂôs your own choice.

Amidst the shitty sound, there's a "Looks Like Rain" that's downright pretty! Yes, it does shine through.

This is unlistenable. Strictly a curiosity until a better source comes along, if it even exists.

"How Sweet It Is" is a treat to listen to, since it was the only time the Dead ever performed it, and the Bo Didley set is a lot of fun. Great show!

Find someone with a decent quality version from this night. The "Boys" and Bo Diddley himslef for the whole first set. Can't you just picure the grin on Jerry's face!! As stated by the reviewer below; the sound is...well, bad. It does get a little better as the show moves on. Check out deadbase.com for a comprehensive list of song order and "special" side notes from the many rare tunes played on this night. 5 stars just because it can't all be about sound quality.

A nice show to add to a collection for the most thorough of collectors. The only version of 'How Sweet it is' and 'Are you Lonely For Me' and a nice Smokestack & Top of the World. Big issue here is sound quality. There are a lot of splices and glitches and mixes of different sources with different quality. You decide if it is worth it to you, but I'll still keep this one
