Best String Quartet on the Planet
I don’t think I’ve ever heard such consistently inventive and creative playing from the three higher-tuned string instruments (the two guitars and the keys) as in this Scarlet>Fire. (Interestingly, the bass seems unusually conventional; but take that with a grain of salt, because I wasn’t focused on Mr. Lesh.). Schubert would have been proud to have composed this brilliant, beautiful, and exceptionally enjoyable “song“.

I often see comments about mix, particularly for soundboard shows. I believe that the mix issues are really hall issues. How did the board mix the sound to make it sound good 30 rows out dead center. You're hearing what was sent to the speakers.

Good show , strange mix.
Jerry is low, Brent is very heavy in the mix. Keyboards sound awesome but wish there was more guitar.

Bad Mix
This is a great show with killer versions of Let it Grow and especially Scarlet>Fire, but be forewarned that the mix in set 2 is terrible, with Jerry way too low. I'd maybe seek out the Charlie Miller AUD source if you want to get the full feel of this one.
-1 for sound.

"Ever since she went and had a sex change"
Another generally strong performance from fall 82'.
"Let It Grow" "Scarlet>Fire" "Truckin'> Stella Blue" are the highlights.
Sounds like a band in their prime to me.
Seeing the Dead in 82', right before all of the problems got really out of control with the band's internal affairs, would have been sweet.
Mickey's 39th birthday. They're playing well for him.
Great sound too.

This is a smoker! 82 is not a year with which I have much familiarity, but will have to explore more now. God bless Jerry and the boys. I love the TLEO here and the pre-drums second set needs no further discussion.
Good tunes for good times!!!

Great show!
What was great about the show besides the fact that the band was hot that night, was that the crowd was groovin and very cool. I went with 2 friends of mine, and had a great time despite the fact that my lime green '67 Volvo station wagon ran out of gas on I95 South heading back to Lauderdale. No matter. 1 of my friends and I jogged to the next exit. We were laughing and having a good time. A great dead show will do that.

the drummers
kudos to clugston for another great remaster and for hilighting some of the other fine musicians in this band. garcia's guitar playing is spectacular at times and a bit frenetic at other times, especially during the first set, not like a typical '82 IMO. the transition from scarlet to fire sparkles with keyboard and cowbell energy. i like the fact that garcia's guitar playing drops into the background during fire, allowing the listener to focus on the layered drumming and percussion out front. the mix also reveals a funny moment at the end of fire when the drummers seemingly cut garcia off in mid lead and abruptly end the song. garcia sounds fabulous the rest of the way, especially the inspired stella blue.

First Show
I was very happy to grab this copy of my first show. It is better than the other versions hanging around.
I was right in front of Jerry the whole show and they were on that night. A little Orange Sunshine went a long way back then. This is a great show!

A new #1 Scarlet>Fire
I looked high and low for years for a Scarlet>Fire I would love more than 9-25-81 at Lehigh U., and now I've found it (Thanks to a poster in forums answering my In Search of Scarlet > Fire Question)...I thank you profusely!
This one not only has the requisite great jam build ups leading into critical points like the "Wind in the Willows" verse, but is actually perfect in terms of Jerry nailing the lyrics in BOTH songs (so rare to hear him get all of "Fire" correct) and he does it w/passion.
The pace is perfect, as Jerr would say in Row Jimmy "Not too fast and not too slow" and sonofagun if they don;t stick the landing back into the final Scarlet coda out of Fire.
Damn this cooks! Worth the DL of the Scalet>Fire alone and 5 stars b/c of it.

Blistering Hot Show!
I really don't understand the 4-stars.... that "scarlet-fire" was a perfect "10" in my book. The music was driving the band at a pace that really couldn't be matched (in my DEAD experience) again. I truly wondered at the time why none of the big three news networks were there to cover this event, "After millions of years, Jerry Garcia had finally put it all together!" Anyway, I finally have a killer copy of this show - the 23 year wait was worth it.
Thank you, Archives!!!

I missed it.
My story will probably never be read. I was a young high school kid with the hot rod and reputation for the heavy metal. I lived in North Palm Beach and knew the Dead were playing in my town that night. Judas Priest was playing in Ft. Lauderdale that night and my gilrfriend and I took my little sister and her friend to see them. They got drunk on cold duck and barfed down the side of my car before we got there to find out Priest was sold out. We went all the way to Miami to see Van Halen and sit behind the stage to view David Lee's butt in a loincloth. To get this show so many years later and see what I missed has me kicking myself around the room. So young, so dumb. This show adds a big deal to my collection for the clarity that Bob expresses in a bunch of his vocal outings and to hear Brent sailing in such tight union with Jerry (who is in real nice form throughout) before Brent really started taking on his vocal responsibilities is very cool. Knowing what he was going to do in five years makes this show a treasure. Let it Grow is a good example of evrything I am talking about and a keeper. Scarlet>Fire and Sailor> Saint geally get out and stretch their legs, too showiing that Jerry and Bob were both on top of their games. Reading that it wasn't that full and I could have stayed home and seen this when I , well...... I missed it.

levels a little low
show is very good, but jerry's guitar levels are little too low and behind the rest of the music..hurts during the transition from scarlet to fire b/c he is playing up and down the frets but you can barely hear it...a hot show otherwise.

Leakey Teepee
Third show ever....It's early shows like this one that get you hooked. I recall being blown away during most of the show but the Let it Grow definitely got my attention and made me realize there was something unique about this band. The one and only appearance at this venue which had the local nickname Leakey Teepee due to the architecture and poor condition. The only soundboard flaw is Brent overshadowing Jerry's solos during Fire.

1983 Without the Junk(Birthday Blowout)
This is a smoker. The Minglewood opener is actually vicious. TLEO has amazing solos by both Brent and Jerry. Jerry turns keep going higher and higher; this one sounds like the Garcia Band version. A fast and raucous MAMU>River with Bobby in that fine 82 form and some ripping solos by Jerry and Brent. The other songs in the first set are sweet too. The Let it Grow is a brutal attack. Jerry is simply out of his head on this thing. Long, fast, imaginative runs and the whole band is right on his tail. One of the best Ive heard for sure.
This is an alltime Scarlet>Fire. Mickey, Billy and Phil lay down a fast groove that is so smooth and tight. Jerry sings it so beautifully. A grate in song run by Jerry, bursting with creativity. The segue into Fire is magical Jerry explores every single possibility before going into Fire. The intro to Fire is so perfect. Jerry shreds all three solos. Smooth and fast, but very thought out and precise; he goes all over the fretboard. One of the best. The Sailor>Saint is Dead on. 82 was a grate year for this combo. The Terrapin is powerhouse version. Awesome pre-drums. The post-drums has absolutely no let up. A very hard and trippy Truckin' followed by a gorgeous Stella. The Round and Round>OMSN by Bobby is wild with Bobby in his 82 nutty persona. Nice Baby Blue.
This is a smoker folks. You need this one. 1982 is the end of an era. It would never be as tight as the 1977-82 era because of the well documented problems Jerry and Co. had. I love the Persian Haze years, but they lost that tightness in 83 and 84. The difference b/w 82 and 83 is staggering. This Birthday Blowout is a super tight and energetic performance.
MANDATORY LISTENING
PEACE
David

Solid Show with Good Sound Quality :))
This is a good sounding show with overall solid playing by the Dead. 1st set is all around good- note the Dupree's, Let it Grow has some excellent Garcia-Mydland interplay. 2nd set-Scarlet-Fire is solid as well with a nice different flow on the Fire end. Sailor-Saint is good as well-Jerry is pretty much on it this show. The Truckin' has some good energy-Stella Blue has some real nice crescendos-
Saturday Night is solid as well
Sound quality is good for cassettes of this era- Jerry and Brent are pretty hot in the mix this night along with Bobby's vocals. This recording has a few spots where the levels got too high but these are not really problems. Overall worth the download I think for shows from '82.
I attended this show and remember it only being 3/4ths full- the floor area was so clear that I was able to easily make my way in front of Jerry and quietly watch him do his work and then slide over right in front of Phil as well at the front of the stage-i wished all my Dead shows were this free and easy. After the show, we drove into the heart of W Palm Beach ad freaked out the old guys in their Cadillacs and White Loafers with shorts on. Aloha my Brothers and Sisters

Whoever this Jonathan Aizen is, he deserves major league kudos..
So does everybody else who had a hand in putting all of 1982 & '83 on line...
Much thanks to everyone involved..
