Love this transition period into 1974 without dissecting individual songs, this show stands strong with or without all the accolade. They always would leave it on the stage. Good quality, patches withstanding, great listening for goin down the road n on a sunny day!!!!

This show illustrates how much they'd changed from just one year before. The Wall of Sound, a much larger indoor place, new, extended songs, more jazz tinged and PHIL had fun playing big sounds. We liked it. The sax touches were alright; not as good as Branford Marsalis much later. They were evolving forward and any show with Playing in the Band, Dark Star and Morning Dew is a good one; these were great renditions. It was quite a long show with an O.K. Doug Sahm opening. Bobby's remark at the very end that they were going to play there tomorrow was unusual; we had to go back to D.C., but glad some could see them again. We saw a nice one in 1973.

Hitchhiked from Auburn, Alabama to William and Mary to see my first Dead concert and wow! Changed my life! Yes the electric Kool aid was bountiful that night and the second as well. Free and no chairs the second night. What a time, what a space in time.

Yes it was 1978...my brother was working the catering on the lawn and was attending William and Mary at the time...said the heads rolled in and took over. Pretty funny to hear him tell it. Apparently the parents were taken aback. The dead never played there again...poor planning on the schools part. Parents weekend coupled with the dead...hmmmm.

"Let Me Sing Your Blues Away"
Gonna hop in the hack then turn on the key,
Pop in the clutch, let the wheels roll free,
Not a cloud in the sky, such a sunny day,
Push in the button, let the top ten play.
Come on honey, let me sing 'em away,
Come on honey, let me sing 'em away,
Oh, honey, let me sing your blues away.
Give me a little of that old time love,
Cause I ain't never had near enough.
Honey, walk that walk with style and grace,
This ain't no knock-down drag-out race.
It don't matter much, pick any gear,
Brind you a pound and drop the rear.
Baby, baby what can I say,
I'm here to drive those blues away.
I sent a letter to a man I know,
Said, "One for the money and two for the show."
I wait all summer for his reply
Said, "Three to get ready and four to fly."
Only two things in the world I love,
That's rock 'n' roll and my turtle dove.
When I was a young man I needed good luck,
But I'm a little bit older now and I know my stuff.
Come on honey, let me sing 'em away,
Come on honey, let me sing 'em away,
Oh, honey, let me sing your blues away.

Deadheads don't forget this day was the very day in 1973 that Kissinger and President Nixon sponsored a Coup-D'Etat in Chile and kills thousands of people, human rights activists and those who didnt want Allende's fasict government. That was done with financialand direct support from the USA and its people. So, one could really say fuck the USA. But, I digrss, this show is killer as I sit here post "Chicago" waiting for the 2015 fall tour to be annpounced. Jerry would maybe say we sghouldnever forget 9/11/73, for thi sdhow and to rememberthose who died in Chile that day, and that the uS should mind its own business so we don't have another 9/11./01 due to everyone but some guy in Tennesee hating the USA in the worlds 191 countries. They know Kissinger but they never knew our American Hero, Mr. Garcia.

just listened to most of this show the other day. the best thing about was was a great L.I.G. that is just so jazzy with martin on that sax. i agree that this is one of the better ones out there. interesting how they go back into the prelude theme at the end too; don't think i've heard that before. the dark star is interesting as well and phil gets wild (but i like it), here though its the dew that really dews it (jer shreeeeds); not the best combo of these songs ever played (that goes to 9/21/72 easily) but still good. china-rider was mellow but good enough. over all a show i would recommend hearing, but for me, can't touch the best of the year, such as 11/17, 3/24, 2/15, 12/6, and 6/22.
p.s. i'm kinda glad "sing your blues away" went back on the shelf after these september horn shows. its an ok song, but keiths voice just ruins it imo

Saw a bunch of '73 shows as a wild youth, but not this one, this seems to be very special one indeed! Sing your Blues Away is very jazzy with sometimes honking sax. Dark Star into Morning Dew is epic. Starts out a very sweet, low-key DS but soons starts to swing out and then morphs into Phil Lesh bombs and feedback. Everything is played perfectly-definitely a keeper. Puts a smile on my face to listen to.

This show has always been one of my favorites, although the copy I had for years was an audience.the aud I have is comparable in quality to 7-1-73.I love the soundboard too,but the horns are a bit loud in the mix on Weather Report Suite. On the aud you can hear the horns from the start of Weather Report Suite. For years I wanted a sbd of this and here it is(thank you !).I really hope someone will upload the audience version ,I believe it will be worth the discs to get it if you can.

Perhaps a bit layed back for some, but the horns work during this performance and Let it Grow is certainly among the best ever.
This George Lanum file sounds very, very good, but an upgrade would be welcome. The China/Rider segue is a bit mellow, but extremely well jammed, and Playin' is simply dynamite!
A show for the Philophiles, Lesh is really throwing his weight around, and Dark Star, with plenty of twists and turns features some dangerous notes creating quite the unique Morning Dew.
This is a top ten show of 1973!

This show is really good. It is, in my opinion, the best show of '73. Jerry gets creative with his solo's and the band seems content. Phil is just playing well into the groove and everything else that makes things good. The 'banter' at this one definitely sent some people for a loop. They are very much playing together for this one, and there is great external collaboration. Although I usually prefer '74 shows, this show has a really good feel to it.
"happy, happy, happy, happy home" at William and Mary has a touch of irony to it as well.

September 73 is changing the band, obviously wrs>lig is a major addition to the act, that it's fine tonight with the horns, check out the 21s of sept for the killer version, its hard to understand the jazz era without this song, farnkely it's relevant in many years, you have to hear the 7/18/76 take, as well as some of the versions from Fall 77 and ovcourse freedom hall. Unforgetable stuff.

This is a great show that sort of mixes the explosiveness of their early catalogue with improving musicianship
Phil's booming solo at the end of Dark Star rocks the speakers
They take Morning Dew from 100 mph to a crawl at a whim and sound flawless doing so
A lot of my personal favorites are well represented: Sugaree, The Race Is On, China>Rider, Playing in the Band, Big River, Beat it on Down the Line, Morning Dew and of course Sugar Magnolia

Nope. The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA is a public school and the oldest university in the US (chartered in 1693, before Harvard). When I was there in the early nineties there was a legend that the last Grateful Dead show on campus had coincided with a Parents Weekend several years before and that the Dead were thereafter banned from campus. Am interested whether anyone can confirm the rumor.

Subject: China>UJB-like jam>Rider!
Whoa..wait a minute. This is now my favorite UJB-like jam during the China>Rider segue. I know there is much confusion among a lot of the youth visiting and reviewing shows here on the archive. Quite a bunch of the young newbies, for some reason, think this jam is Mind Left Body. But it is NOT. The boys played MLB jam during Dark Star or between The Other One and Spanish Jam, and even alone by itself in 1990-1991. (For a great MLB jam, get 10/19/73, OKC Fairgrounds.)
Anyway, this particular China>Rider segue is special. Actually, the entire medley is killer. Other highlights for me are WRS>Let it Grow, and a mind blowing Dark Star. Then there is DEW!!! Whoa! Check out Phil's thunder bass as they go into Jerry's first solo. DAMN, this is sick....you may want to tourn down the bass levels if listening in the car or at home unless your system can take it. This show is just f-ing superb all around.

Once upon a time, before all the terrorist propaganda bullsh@@t began, Sept. 11th meant something different - Mickey Hart's birthday!! So when you've had enough of all the media fear mongering - get out this show and crank it up. Your state of mind will improve immediately!
I've had this show in MP3 for years, but listening now to this SHN copy, I realize I had under-rated this fine show. Maybe not a top ten, but it still holds its own against heavy competition in 1973. The Set One is well played as usual, with standout versions of Loser and China>Rider. The first set Half Step is a surprise and delivered with plenty of honky-tonk funkiness. Jerry's playing and vocals are passionate.
And then - - what else? Another great 1973 Playin. This version, although a bit shorter than most in 73, is so good, it's nearly the high point of the show for me. At about 3 minutes, right after the vocals, Garcia wastes no time in getting down to jam business. He breaks out the wah wah, and gives us a very mellow and melodic jam, while Bill keeps up the fast shuffle. The space jam near the end is pretty and leaves you with a smile.
Set Two begins with Sing Your Blues Away, and this would be the first show featuring the horn duo of Fierro and Ellis. All the following September shows included the horns on Sing Your Blues, Let it Grow, and sometimes Eyes. They were trying to promote the release of Wake of the Flood (Oct 1973) which featured those songs. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but listening back now, the horns seem to get in the way of the Dead's sound just a little. Still, they add a nice spice and make these September versions intereresting and different to hear. Let it Grow is high energy all the way, and when the sax solos kick in - well this is about as jazz fusion as it gets for the Dead. Jerry delivers some blistering leads about halfway through, with the sax weaving around him. A strong version. Big River is done with plenty of fire and twang. Deal is laid back but tasty nonetheless. Then, the cosmic Kool Aid arrives!
Dark Star starts with a long mellow jam, featuring some very creative colors from Phil and Jerry. They don't even play the Dark Star theme until 9 minutes into the piece - which leads into - the verse? Wrong! The rhythm section starts up a fast riff, which is taken up by Keith, then Jerry, and we're off to Jamville again! And Bill's drum work here is just stellar as usual. Comparisons to Mitch Mitchell come to mind. Finally after 17 minutes of jams, Jerry brings in the verse, then Phil drops the bomb and they take you to the Phil Zone for a few minutes (watch your speakers folks) before landing you - still vibrating - into a gorgeous Morning Dew. Dew fans, this bud's for you - 12 minutes of Jerry giving it all he's got. Why his guitar didn't burst into flame I don't know. The quiet sections are breathtaking, the loud ones will make your hair stand up.
An encore would have been nice, maybe an UJ's Band. But as is, a very enjoyable show. Recommended, along with 9/21 and 9/26.
enjoy,
Dr. Flashback :-)

From start to finish, a great show. (Let Me Sing Your Blues, never a good song, at least is played well.) A nice Uncle John's Band riff in the middle of I Know You Rider, a really jammin' Playing in the Band that goes to some interesting places. A fabulous Weather Report Suite. (Watch out for Donna on Beat It, though.) An interesting Dark Star with a big Phil solo that resolves into a sweet Dew.
One of the best of '73.

This was my first of many dead shows that I've gotten here, and this one is by far the best one I've come across. The concert and audio quality is exceptional, with the exception of some pops and cracks, but they're small and have no real damage on the listening experience. Weather Report Suite Prelude>Weather Report Suite Part 1>Let it Grow is definitely the best version I've heard, with a funny conversation with Jerry in the start. I really wish I had actually been there, but this recording is as close as it gets to the real thing!!!

Dark Star bored me to tears, until Phil threw down some thunder towards the end. The Climactic ending to Morning Dew saved the day, and made this DL worth while, absolutely smoking.

And it stoned me..... My life was never the same. I was a freshman at W & M for orientation week and decided to go and see who these guys were.
What a long strange trip its been. FYI, the Doug Sahm band was the warm-up and the sax player from Doug Sahm played on Weather Report. At the end of the show (about 2:00 am as I recall), Bobby came out and said that the band had had such a good time that they decided to come back tomorrow nite(unannouced up to that point) - take out all the floor seats -general admission $3.00 per person. im sorry, did i forget to mention the mindfu@#ck called "playing in the band?"
if you want to fall in love with the dead all over again, take some time and study this show. after a month or so, some of it will sink in, after a few years, like all fine wines.....

Heckuva good show here. Sound quality is pure crisp excellence. First set is great throughout - excellent China->Rider, LLR and Playin' (nice wah work by Jerry). 2nd set is super-cool. Martin Fiero jams his butt off, and doesn't overstay his welcome. Great - and the DStar is adventerous, yet very accessible and friendly (other than towards the very end when Phil goes a little too over the edge for my taste). But this goes into a very beautiful and mild, moving to extremely passionate, Morning Dew. Great show - it would be a 6 on any other bands 5 point scale, but compared to other Dead shows, it's a 4 or 4.5 -- excellent show.

It was a birthday in the band and they had a good night of it. A treat for all in attendance with an amazing setlist and even better execution of the songs...esp. LL Rain, Loser, WRS > Let it Grow. Sound quality is nice, even Lo-Fi sounds real good, but lossless is best. Enjoy this download :-)

Very nice show with a very nice setlist. The highlight, as always with shows of this era, is the beautiful Weather Report Suite (why did this drop from the setlist after '74?!) The Dark Star is VERY good considering that this era isn't known for them
4/5 stars because 5 stars is reserved for the bees knees of concerts only.
