Lights out show with lights on 2nd encore
I had recently moved to SF and this was my very first show in CA after a steady diet of midwest and east coast shows. Such a different vibe was really great. Jerry came out on fire that evening. Seemed to really have his groove back post coma. As a newbie to the area, everyone told me Kaiser was hell to get to (true) and even harder to get back to SF if the show ran long bcs BART at the time stopped running at midnight (also true).
Well in the days before Uber and Lyft we needed to catch a cab back to SF bcs this show smoked our brains. EVERYONE was standing after the first encore, the light came on and people were still screaming and clapping. The boys obliged and came back out and played One More Saturday Night with the lights on. Crazy fun!
I prefer listening to shows from earlier in their career, in particular 72-74 but this show will always hold a special memory for me with being my first CA and the 2nd encore.

97 Was a Great Year
Jerry was fresh off the coma, with energy. I was at this Show. The Kaiser was a excellent place to see the boys. Bill Grahm would often mingle with the crowd coming in. I shook his hand one night and gave him a huge bear Hug, Classic. The Kaiser was a bitch to get to, and park but again a Great venue. Right up there with the Greek, Marin civic, etc... I give it 5 stars cause I was there...

Solid show, but we need Drummers with Motivation and Fresh Energy
1st Set: A steadying "Pocky" opens up the gig. What the heck is that husky, deep freak-y voice during the 2nd chorus? (2:00) Jerry's 'rock' is on during a well-played "Jack." "Row" just feels right though there's nothing exceptional about the performance. What "Masterpiece" lacks in tempo, it more than makes up for with Jerry's guitar. He's on tonight, folks. "Dupree's" is ordinary, but a pleasant surprise. A nice little skiffle precedes "He really takes suggestions well," from Bobby leading to a standard "Box." Someone wake up the drummers out of this tepidity. "Cassidy" is throughly investigated but this is some of the laziest drumming I've heard in awhile. "Might as Well" is a bright upper to this above-average set.
2nd Set: A fluid and uplifting "UJB" opens up proceedings though any outo jam is excised in favor of a stright transition into "Playing." Jerry takes us into a journey rarely experienced in the brevity of '87. The music easily slides into a dynamic "Terrapin" where Brent matches Jerry's intensity. Of course this rolls us into "Drums" that quickly transports me to the outer reaches of my mind. I visit "Space" while there. An official trippy, feels like "Truckin" is coming jam precedes...wait, it's getting evil, and we get a grungy "Miracle." Instead of more standard uptempo numbers, the band makes the right decision by veering into the death of "Black Peter." "Throwing" musically awakens during the bridge, but at least the drumming is active throughout. Not a smooth performance, but powerful. I dig the pause between the songs, crowd clapping, which way will they go? Well, I'm going to tell ya how it's going to be: "NFA" It's your basic stuff.
We're encoring with a rarified "Knockin," oddly paired with a breezy "Saturday night."
3 2/5ths of a show... Good time

Boys Came to Play
This is the show! I remember the Terrapin Station being the most intense one I ever witnessed- the way they bring you way up (in the ending jam) and then back down again, over and over. You can hear the crowd cheer them on! Great show, especially for '87.

love this site
Back when I had cassettes I played this show so much that both sets were eaten by the machine. Now I can upgrade in glory. Great show. was always scared off by the UJB>PLAYIN>TERRAPIN sets of the late 80's but this one is mean.
First set has the rare Duprees as well as a Now polished Hey pocky way.
Good stuff

Fine 87 Show
I wasn't at this show, so I have no personal attachment.
I heard some of this show back in 92 or 93 on a grateful dead hour and I liked it then. Hearing the whole show now confirms how good it is. Solid all the way through. Easily worth 5 stars. Nice quality recording too.

I was a bit dissapointed with the previous night because the Dead seemed like they would have rather been sitting at home than to be at the show. This show was definately much better really hot. It is the only time I saw the Dead come back onstage to play a second encore. I have seen them play two back to back not but come back onstage again like this. The venue was great too. Saw a bunch of friends of mine and was glad it was harvest time too. It was a treat to see Bill Grahm playing vollyball for tickes and loose for his team. Small place too like a high school gym but souded great.

Black Peter
The music is special but what takes it over the top for me is the soul & emotion that comes through behind the music. For example, Jerry's vocals on Peter are amazing.

Gonna be a long long crazy crazy night...
Yowsa, dat was some show! The one and only time I ever saw the boys come back out for a second encore after the lights had already gone up. I rushed back to the front of the stage and got a place right at Phil's feet (the one and only time I ever got that close to the stage!) Afterwards, my audio geek buddy starts talking to Healy back at the board. Next thing I know, everyone else in the venue is gone but the BGP people, the crew, and us two Heads. Back out on stage comes Weir, who starts working out something on his guitar by himself. Healy then procedes to piss off the crew by making them turn the whole sound system back on so that he (and we!) could listen to an audience recording that someone had just brought him. Later on that night in the little park next to the Kaiser I thought, "Did I just hallucinate all that?" But I'm reasonably certain that it really did happen...

wild crowd / great show
One of the better shows of the year and easily one of the most fired up crowds I was ever a part of. After a long NFA chant that got the band back on stage for a NFA->Knockin' encore, the crowd would not go away quietly. Although this recording has been edited, stomping, shouting, clapping for a good 5 mins took place and got the band back out for the Saturday Night capper. I never saw a crowd more hungry and electric than this night. You had to be there.
