Tender, soothing, perfect. Brimming with firecracker... jerry rips a mean fret-flyer or two

down to business in the mines of emotion. Tight and incredible. A gem of a intuitive version with lots of rootsy charisma and swingin' euphoria..

Slow and serious. Mickey is masterful as is the overall tone control.Solo could have had more satisfying crescendo, fun lowkey set 1 vibe

gobsmackingly propulsive, stands with the best, most fluid and excitingly spritely stranger jams. Must-hear.

Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain
May 7, 1978
Field House - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

well refreshed at set break. For sure. This one doesn't fuck around. Skirts away from the watercolor innocent nature flows of more "pretty" scarletfire for a more aggressive and bizarre mindset. some versions, they lock into an effortless psychic palmreading jam, others the devils are trying to set the tone and be weird during the lyrics so the jam is more like boxing, an unnerving process of reaction and being unpredictable on purpose. Drummers off the leash always makes for ridiculous versions when all the slack isn't on the chordals to make shit happen. Gets to some very untethered outcomes. Bubbly and brutal. This one won't be for everyone but it's always on the edge, often it's fantastic and always super physical.
Friend of the Devil

Field House - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Speedy propulsive and manic, yep this is a FOTD. Pushing the boundaries in the first set, cascading devils circus throughout, solo builds from jazzy, heavy but still gorgeous to pummelling hard rock fury. nuclear phil for "second one is prison babe"
Jack Straw

Field House - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Freaky chromatic exploration from everyone but especially phil and keith throughout the whole first set

classic tour and special version, Phil and keith are insane the whole year and some of these more fragile moments like this and the psych ward loner moments of playin'
