Promised Land

Keith and Jerry are manic pinball flippers bouncing their solos off each other here. Fun set closer.

Smooth and satisfying, rouses the crowd right up too. What a sweet show this is.

Mama Tried
June 23, 1976
Tower Theatre

Fun, raucous, and rowdy, but full of tight ensemble jamming and a nice Bobby/Jerry balance, allowing you to hear Cowboy Bob's great backup work.

Jerry's voice is at his most elegant, showing some smoke. Keith is supremely intuitive and beautiful, the band goes higher and higher. Great version.

These early ones have such brilliant swagger, you can really hear the gospel power to them

Rockin' Pneumonia

Folsom Field, University of Colorado

A boogie-woogie unrehearsed mess of a rarity, and I love it.
Jack Straw

Folsom Field, University of Colorado

A damn fine Jack Straw in an excellent show from a peak era. What more could y'all be looking for?

No joking matter: This is Danger Dead. Bad PA or not, when you want a punch in the brain, here's your monster.
Cold Rain and Snow
Sept. 3, 1972
Folsom Field, University of Colorado

Between the August Berkeley run, Veneta and this knock-out, I'd say this was a peak run for Cold Rains.
The Other One

Folsom Field, University of Colorado

From its silky smooth flow out of He's Gone with its steam-whistle feedback on arrival, this one seeps down from on high, then runs through your bloodstream like a good strong double dose of The Strange. It's long and weird, even though the meltdown sections never go completely bonkers. The re-entry is a musical wonder considering just how far out they were in the moment, and it must have left more than a few jaws dropped to the floor.
