Scarlet Begonias -> Fire On The Mountain

This is a good version but nothing terribly special. The Scarlet is average, but the jam into Fire has some interesting moments, particularly towards the end when, like 3/31, phil and brent seem to be ready for Fire while Jerry flutters above them. This is less rambling than the 3/31 transition so I think "works" a little better, but Jerry skips ahead of the rest and jumps right into his wah riff, forcing the others to catch up. Just nitpicking here, as this Fire is strong (Healy's echo effects are actually pretty freakin cool). If you want a spring '84 Scarlet->Fire (or just any Scarlet->Fire) check out 4/20.

^grendel, I agree with you on the transition on the basis of it being fascinating to hear the rest of the guys kind of wait and watch Jerry. But I think it's a little too noodly and fluffy, and not that exciting musically. That being said, I upvoted as well, because this is a strong overall version deserving of higher ranking IMO. time to tackle Hampton!

Brent really does add a lot in the transition and during Fire, which is stellar. Jerry's particularly melodic solo in Scarlet is another highlight. I thought the transition jam lagged just a little, so I still think 4/20/84 is a bit better overall. I'll have to listen to the 4/13 version from Hampton ASAP considering the quality of these Spring '84 versions

Some Scarlet->Fire transitions are pure power (I see you Copps), some so stealthy and polished that there is no beginning or end (Cornell), but this one simply melts, in the best way. Listen to Phil create tension under Jerry's Fire-y arpeggiations and Brent's airy twinkles, then release it by dropping his bass line just perfectly. The ensuing Fire oozes along with a patient groove that Jerry eats up happily, laying down choice licks while letting the band keep churning. And that's not even mentioning the Scarlet...you know what to do!

This Fire is excellent. It doesn't have the soaring peaks as some others, and it isn't that long, but all of Jerry's phrases are meticulous and incredibly well-structured. I love his tone on the Miller board - super crunchy. Brent also shines on the organ. Listen up!
