Friend of the Devil

Uptown Theatre

Underrated show here, apparently. This is a good version from an excellent show.

Me and My Uncle

Providence Civic Center

Starting to be a little disco-inflected, but none the worse for it; Garcia is firing away...

Black Throated Wind

Academy of Music

Really solid version; about as good as it gets

Not Fade Away

Hartford Civic Center

Rather surprising this hasn't been submitted, this show seeks a bit underrated in general. Garcia gets majorly vicious here.

The Other One
May 10, 1972
Concertgebouw

This is probably the best music ever played anywhere on planet Earth. Pigpen joins right in the thick of the most hairy section, putting the lie to the claim he couldn't jam. Ernie, you don't like Bobby McGee? That always has an incredible solo....
China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider
Oct. 11, 1989
Meadowlands Arena

A little sleepy at times, but not half bad

Yes this is great, although Weir in this era of the song makes some unfortunate noises
He's Gone
May 23, 1972
Strand Lyceum

It's developing--slower now, and there's the bridge in it at this point. This number takes a quantum leap on September 9th, which ushers in a golden age up to the hiatus....there's a nice little mini-jam at the end here, though, so this is not chopped liver

Cal Expo

This song always sounded kind of like a mess to me, partly because Weir never really committed to the lyrics. I guess I hear what they're trying to do with this one, though, and it's cool.
