I love, love, love 1973-10-30 at the Kiel auditorium. This show makes some of the same setlist moves, and indeed even the Dark Star takes a similar approach (although it's a bit less successful here than the stunning masterpiece on the 30th). But the post-Dark Star stuff here--particularly Eyes of the World and this--gets absolutely vicious, something that never happens at Kiel, where they keep an even kiel (to great effect, mind you). This really blasts you, though, and while WRS is consistently killer, it's a standout version.

Very laid back, like they’re playing from beanbag chairs—in a good way. If you listen to the jam as a “guitar solo,” it makes no sense. Key in on Phil, and Garcia’s brilliance becomes evident. He lays in the cut and then gives it just enough of a goose to take it out on. Excellent version of a sometimes-maligned current favorite of mine.
