April '78 S>F's often mentioned are 4/16 and 4/24 (rightly so) but this one is every bit as good. Superior transition jam--, beautiful, & powerful

I'm a '72-'73 snob when it comes to this tune and often scoff at any 80s version being mentioned in the same company (mostly b/c Jerry's vocals are just painful when he tries to hit the high notes), but this is so spectacular it can hang with nearly any of the vintage year Bird Songs, and somehow, despite the year, Garcia actually sings it well! The jam is a palette of sound and color and imagination that rewards multiple listening. Another diamond found in the rough of a tough year.

Just outstanding vocals from Jerry here. Man, he was out of it a lot in '84, but when he was IN IT, he was electrifying. This version is all about growling vocals, commitment to each verse and line, and a pretty damn fine bridge jam thrown in for good measure. As noted above, check out "Goodbye Momma & Papa..." Dang.

Her CrackStraw, I was once there with this song. Never disliked it, just never gave it much thought. These days, it's one of my favorites. Good thing is there are so many really outstanding versions....they always played this song beautifully, especially in 1977. I'd check out nearly any '77 from the top tier of this list--I'll just throw out one right now: 5/5/77, and if nothing else marvel at Jerry's solos in the instrumental sections. It's Wes Montgomery jazz worthy stuff. Jerry also seemed to love the "story" of this song, and rarely messed up the words, which is funny, considering the multiple verses. Anyway, hope you find one or a hundred you like.

Always on the lookout for great versions of this song, one of my all time favorite Jerry tunes and I think a bit underappreciated, so thanks for pointing me to this show, which I was only vaguely aware of and will check out more. If I can be a bit nit-picky about this one, it's that Jerry's old nemesis, the blown lyric, pops up at an especially bad time. After kinda flubbing the "here's a half a dollar" line the first time around, he brings it back when it's time for "broken heart don't feel so bad" after the second jam break. Again, a small thing in the overall scheme, but I like this song so much I get protective of it ;-) Still, lot to like here. This one strikes me as that rare version in which Garcia's first instrumental break may outshine his second. This one's just country-beautiful, flowing and gentle and a joy to the ear. The final repeated choruses are also better done than many, with a picked-up gait and noticeable reggae infusion. This won't crack my top 5 list (3/20/77, 4/12/78, 2/28/73, 9/18/74, 2/4/78), but it's worthy of upvote and further listening.

Wow. Getting called out by not one, but 2 of my favorite posters! Tough crowd, but you gotta love Deadheads being honest. We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one, fellas. I listened again recently and enjoyed this PITB thoroughly top to finish. And deadprof you're right that Keith is a great presence here, I just think Billy really drives this one along. Still will campaign for this one to go higher, though, despite yours and cgarces' objections ;-)
