During the pre China Cat jam you can hear the members of the band literally fighting musically on stage. After the conclusion of the track titled "Jam (1)" on Dick's Picks, Bob and Phil clearly try to direct the band into the beginning of the song, but Jerry refuses, pushing and pushing everyone into deeper waters with his passionate solos. Eventually the others submit to his will, but FINALLY, around 3:45, Bobby forces them into the song proper. I'm not convinced they would have ever reached it otherwise
