Seldom can you say an Eyes straight up shreds. They can be pretty groovy and brisk (and the first part of this one is) but the back quarter of the jam gets uncharacteristically aggressive for a few minutes. One of those perfect Grateful Dead moments when the band makes anything seem possible.

Ned's presence really changes things here. I don't blame people for not liking it, but for the most part I think the synthesizers really do enrich the spaciest parts of the jam. This one has a few blistering sections but overall it often sounds menacing and deliberate.

Good lord this one goes everywhere under the sun. It's a slow burner, blossoming into a beautiful and dramatic midsection into a triumphant krautrock-esque Phil-led jam. From there, it dissolves delicately into Morning Dew. Once you factor in that this is a big slab of meat in hearty 1972 Playing sandwich, this is a must-hear

In a word, it's downright stately. Keith is front and center in the bookends and particularly in the closing third where his playing takes on a gentle, beautiful lilt. Jerry plays his ass off as you'd expect of a late '72 PITB, while Phil is absolutely steering the ship through the stormiest part of the jam.

Is this the greatest PITB? No. However, it deserves a lot of credit nonetheless for demonstrating how far the band was willing to go, and boy do they go far. In many places it reminds me a lot of what Weather Report was putting out around the same time--constantly shifting, sometimes a little too fidgety.
