Loser

Radio City Music Hall

Best Loser you haven’t heard yet! Jerry takes the solo for an extra walk around the block! Required listening folks!

Jerry’s tone is just impeccable here! Moreover, Jerry adds a tad more umph to the soulful vocals. A standout of the era!

Big River

Omaha Civic Auditorium

Blazing version, but I nominated it primarily for its placement within the context of the tasty Playin'->Half-Step->Big River->Playin' sandwich.

Jerry's pipes never sounded sweeter, and Keith's barrel-house piano chops complements perfectly!

Deserves mention.

Lazy Lightnin' -> Supplication

Boston Music Hall

Underrated.
St. Stephen
June 11, 1976
Boston Music Hall

Although the St. Stephen bust out from two days earlier (the first in 5 years) is more celebrated, this version is actually better. It's more assured, thoughtful, and focused. This is a version from a show that sometimes gets over looked due to so many stellar shows this month in 1976.
China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider

Yup, this one's all about the unique transition.
The Other One
July 1, 1973
Universal Amphitheatre

Great version! While similar to 'Milkin' the Turkey' or 'Stronger than Dirt', the riff Phil introduces at the 8:35 mark is actually a vamp he played relatively often in '73 (the Dark Stars on 2/26 and 6/24, the Other Ones on 2/28 and 6/29 are prime examples). It's a riff in 6/8 time, so I simply call it the "6/8 stomp", similar to the "philo stomp", which in and of itself is another wholly unique thing Phil played during the fall of '72 (Dark Stars on 10/18, 10/28, 11/13 and the Other One on 10/24). But I digress! This version of the Other One takes on much of a spacey and moody character, and the AUD version does it justice.
Playin' In The Band
July 1, 1973
Universal Amphitheatre

Woefully underrated. Only a 9 vote count?!... C'mon heads! This show is an underdog when compared to some of the heavy weights of the summer (5/26, 6/10, 6/22, 7/27), and I suspect that simply less folks have actually listened to this one. Charlie Miller has worked his magic cleaning up the master reels, but I believe the AUD source is the way to go with this night. It's the best AUD tape we have from 1973, and the ambience really puts you there. Jerry is a bit high in the mix, but that hardly has to be a bad thing. This reading of Playin' is superlative in the golden era for this song ('72-'74). Re-listen (or perhaps, listen?) and vote.
