Alert! This one not a throw-away. The best one of '74, no foolin'. Played with a perfect balance of gusto, gumption & grit.

This version should be ranked higher, and this opens the door to a broader discussion I've been meaning to address. I have an inkling of suspicion that less folks have heard this version since the last digit of the year it was performed ends in 8 rather than 7! Indeed, 1978 often stands in the shadow of 1977 by the opinion of so many heads, and while I can see why so many see 1977 as some sort of pinnacle, 1978 was a year with a lot to offer. Of the 15 current top ranked Sugarees', 10 of them are from 1977! It's true '77 was a great year in terms of tightness and consistency, but 1978's more dynamic, daring, sometimes erratic nature also offers more spectrum--and surprises! I'll concede 1978 contains more low points as a whole, but the high points are often more interesting than its much lauded younger sister. Just check out what Bobby Ace is doing on slide on this Sugaree. You won't hear that in 1977!

Seamless transition. Cleanest version.

This show has never left a big impression on me. I was at this show, and remember thinking Jerry has just checked out. During "Shakedown", I remember heads around me saying "where's the funk Jerry?" Well, there was none. I wanted it to be there, as it was one of my favorite tunes, but the winds were simply not in "captain trips" sails by that point. That said, this version of So Many Roads was the one redeeming quality performance from Jerry that night. The song has grown on me through the years, and this small nugget of goodness from an otherwise sub-par show can still the leave the glass half full. Remember, "Once in a while you can get shown the light, in the strangest of places if you look at right." We miss you, Jerry.

And I forgot to mention Pig on organ! The Europe tour of '72 really showcases the rich texture created by the interplay between Keith on piano & Pig on organ. A short-lived marriage that only makes the glory of 1972 all the more sweeter.
