You Win Again

Pauley Pavilion

Just the third performance, and it's an A+ banger of a country twanger. I wish they'd kept this song in the rotation.

Big Railroad Blues

Has that great chugging rhythm of '71 versions. Keith (per usual) is a huge factor, but Billy's drumming is just as potent here. Awesome version!

Keith made all the difference turning this into a barrelhouse powerhouse. What a tremendous performance of a fun song.

This version soars thanks to Keith's dynamic piano work. You'd never know they'd only been playing JS for a month...great one.

Check out the cool China Cat jam leading into GDTRFB! Some pristine versions of NFA>GDTRFB from the Fall '71 tour - this one's no exception.

^ Appreciate it, man. Yeah, I've seen that kind of aggressive stuff from said user before - racial slurs, insults, and everything else in between. It's not just him, though - I typically call behavior like that out on here and other assorted sites. I swear some people act like GD listeners NEED to be expert analysts who listen to the band 24/7, do extensive research on each note, and who have the exact same opinion as them on every version. Meanwhile, they're oblivious that people's understanding of the Grateful Dead (or any band, for that matter) comes in layers and spectrums, and that there is no "right" way to listen to the band or like a version. Luckily, I think most people realize that, but boy...every once in a while, you get someone who blows a gasket over how someone's "listening to it wrong." Anyway...that's all I had to say on that. Happy listening, dude! :)

Dude...while I appreciate that you edited and completely rewrote the original comment, I think my reaction is justified for the original one you left months ago. There's a big difference between being curious as to why people like a version - and calling people idiots for liking a version. Personally, I kind of agree that this one isn't a top-tier rendition, but that's the fun in sites like this - reading what other people have to say, offering support when there's a version that speaks to us personally, and not getting unreasonably aggressive because someone has preferences different than us.

Man...I think that's just a bit of an overreaction there. I mean, isn't the whole point of the GD's music (and music in general, really) to bring us together - not divide us? ................. Speaking of, I have a fondness for this one, as well as Cornell in general. See, my mom's not a Head by any stretch of the imagination, but she does enjoy their music and it never fails to make her happy. I'll tell ya...driving through the desert mesas of Arizona at sunset, my mom singing along to Fire on the Mountain from this very show, the whole world orange and pink and aglow with the light of the cosmos...that's a moment I wouldn't trade for anything. If that makes me, or her, just a dumb American for enjoying this version...well, I'll gladly take it.
The Other One

I can't say enough good things about this early one. Different lyrics, a slightly different vibe from later versions, but my GOD is it a spicy performance. Aggressive, manic, and Garcia's tone is as heavy as it ever got. This is how The Other One should be played - pure volume and energy all the way through.
