Following one of the most powerful versions of The Other One ever, this Drums is on par with the rest of the best show of 1979. The goods!

Help On The Way > Slipknot > Franklin's Tower
Oct. 10, 1994
USAir Arena

Little known because of mostly poor soundboards that circulated. I was at this show, as well as 10/1 (which this is comparable) and about a dozen others on this tour. This was a really fun night. This H > S > F is sooooo good! Crazy sounds throughout Franklins, but it was so much fun! The crowd was totally into this night...being the best of the three nights in Landover. Huge pre drums with Estimated > Terrapin following the Franklins. For 1994, that was huge and they brought it this night.
Help On The Way > Slipknot > Franklin's Tower

Boston Garden

I scored killer seats for this show - last minute too! I’m so glad i made the drive up to Boston. Jerry was in surprisingly great form this night. The summer tour was quite a bummer, so i was hesitant about fall. But, fall turned out to be a great ride. I was only two rows off the floor, right at the corner of the stage, so I could see the boys really well! As soon as Jerry came out, i knew it was gonna be a good night. He looked much better than he did in August and he was wearing shorts and was smiling ear to ear. With the tuning of Help, it was game on. We had lucked out and were about to get one of the top 3 shows of the year, if not THE one. The slipknot is gritty and charges straight ahead, into a bubbly, bouncing, rollicking Franklin’s. I’m telling you, Jerry was ON tonight. No chin on chest 95 abyss. His head was up, he was happy, focused, and was dancing during the Franklins! Needless to say, the rest of the show was a blast. My favorite Althea of all time. And Scarlet > Fire to open the 2nd set. Yeah, this was THE night! ....Also.... check out 10/10/94. I was at that show as well. It has another comparable but even longer and whackier Help > Slip > Franklin’s. Awesome stuff!

Killer version! I love the segment right before the first verse. Keith starts this “climbing” riff that everyone picks up on and they all go with it. Short but so sweet. It’s one of those little snippets that stands out and replays in your head when you listen to other Dark Stars. That’s when you know you have something special.
Dark Star
Sept. 27, 1972
Stanley Theatre

September 1972 was perhaps one of the jazziest periods of Grateful Dead. Obviously, 73 & 74 get all the recognition for being jazzy, but this Dark Star is the perfect example of how improvisational they could get, sounding like a modern jazz quintet. Dick was spot on with this pick. Also, check out the massive Other One from 9/17/72...there’s a segment that could easily pass for an early 60’s Blue Note session - it really is that jazzed up. Billy K was absolutely amazing during his solo drumming tenure from 71-74...the master! Also...to segue into Cumberland? What a head spinner!

I was beyond elated when the “Houseboat” reels surfaced and this show was among them!!! The Dark Star > Birdsong is absolutely sublime. Billy’s drumming is primal. High energy, raw, beautiful.
